Bowling And Chess To Begin in 2010-11 School Year

IESA will launch two new activities -- Chess and Bowling -- next school year (2010-11).

Following is a look at the important dates and a brief summary of how the competition will be conducted in Chess and Bowling:

Details -- The first-ever State Chess Tournament will be at the U. S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington. Entry fee is $15 per participant. The competition will be individual competition using any combination of boys and/or girls at each board and will use the Board Swiss Format with 5 boards. Competition will be in a 7th grade division and an 8th grade division. Schools may enter one player at each of boards 1-4 and a maximum of 3 players at board 5 in the 7th grade division and in the 8th grade division. There will be 7 rounds of play and each player will compete in all 7 rounds. Awards will be given in both team and individual competition. There will be an individual champion on each of the five boards in both 7th and 8th grade competition. There will be no levels of competition below the State Tournament. In addition, a Chess Workshop will be conducted in Bloomington on October 29, 2010. Information about the workshop is available in the Activity Update PDF in the Chess section online at the IESA Web site at www.iesa.org. The tournament format allows for a maximum of 1,500 players.

How To Enter Chess: Each member school must enter through the member center on the IESA Website at www.iesa.org. Go to the Membership Dues and Activity Registration section and click to enter Bowling. At the completion of the registration process, an invoice will be generated. Forward the invoice and school check to the IESA Office by the initial or final entry deadline. This is the same entry procedure that is used in all other IESA state series and/or events.

Details -- The first-ever State Bowling Tournament will be at Town and Country Bowl in Joliet. There will be one individual scratch competition for boys and one individual scratch competition for girls. There will be no separate divisions for 7th or 8th grade competition. Member schools may enter up to two (2) boys and two (2) girls in the State Tournament. Prior to the final entry deadline there will be 90 spots guaranteed in the tournament for boys and 90 spots guaranteed in the tournament for girls. The field will be capped at the first 180 total bowlers entered. After the original entry deadline, the open spots in the 180 bowler field will not be reserved for bowlers based upon either sex. Member schools that have not entered the maximum of 2 boys and 2 girls may enter bowlers up to the school maximums until the final entry deadline, or until the number of entries reaches 180.

These entries will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis regardless of sex. Entry fee will be $20 per bowler. There will be no levels of competition below the State Tournament. There will be no team trophies awarded. There will be medallions awarded to the top 15 bowlers in the boys competition and to the top 15 bowlers in the girls competition.
