How to Join an Advisory Committee

Advisory Committees are composed of administrators of member schools, officials, and coaches in a given activity. Each activity advisory committee shall meet annually to make recommendations to the Board of Directors for procedures to be used during the regular season and conduct of the state tournament series in that activity. Advisory committees also shall make recommendations for changes or improvements in the National Federation or other adopted playing rules for athletic activities as applicable for students in grades five through eight.

Advisory committees shall abide by the current Constitution and By-Laws of the Association and keep in mind the objectives of the Association to promote throughout Illinois the ultimate education objectives of healthy bodies and minds; wise use of leisure time; and social and vocational activities.

A member of the IESA administrative staff responsible for a given activity works with the advisory committee in developing the scope of the committee's work. Along with an appointed liaison member of the Board of Directors, the IESA administrator represents the committee to the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors is responsible for implementing the plans of each activity advisory committee.

Members of the advisory committees are appointed by the IESA administrative staff member responsible for each committee, keeping in mind representation throughout the membership divisions and as much equality as possible between male and female members and Class A and AA schools. Administrators of member schools may recommend coaches from their schools to serve on the advisory committees to the IESA Office.

In addition to the annual meeting, the committee may also meet at other times as deemed necessary by the administrative staff member or the Board of Directors when there happens to be unusual activity or problems within that activity.

Advisory committee members also assist the administrative staff member and host member school in the conduct of the state final tournament or meet in their activity.

To apply for Advisory Committee candidacy, fill out the Application Form or call the IESA office at 309-829-0114. Applicant names will be placed in a database indicating their willingness to serve. Interested individuals will be selected based upon the need of the advisory committees (i.e., geographic location, girls/boys coach, etc.). Please keep in mind that the IESA Office receives a large number of applicants for relatively few committee seats.
