IESA Procedures for Class A & AA State Track Meet
This procedure maintains a high level of interest and eliminates long delays. All contestants in these events shall be assigned in order of their sectional qualification, with the person with the best height or distance being last in order.
Pole Vault
3 trials at each height. Raise 3" at a time until 8 contestants are left at state level. Then raise 2" at a time. NATIONAL FEDERATION RULE 7-5-3 (PG. 56) WILL BE ENFORCED. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO ENSURE YOUR POLES ARE WITHIN THE GUIDELINES.
Each competitor in the pole vault shall be weighed in advance of the competition in the event. Competitors shall weigh in wearing their school issued uniform, any clothing in addition to the school issued uniform that will be worn while vaulting, shoes and helmet. The combined weight of the person, all clothing, shoes and helmet will be the "competitor's weight" used to determine compliance with the NFHS Rule 7-5 exclusive.
High Jump
(Until 12 contestants are left)
3 trials at each height. Raise 2" at a time until 6 contestants are left at state level. Then raise 1" at a time. The event judge shall take the first five competitors (A, B, C, D, and E) listed in the event as a continuing flight as a group to begin competition. Each of this group will be called in order.
When one of the first group of five passes the remaining turns at that height, clears the bar, or is eliminated, Competitor F (the next person in order on the list) shall be moved into the continuing flight. G would be the next competitor to move into the continuing flight under the same conditions and would be followed by H, I, J, and all others in order as their turns came so that the number of contestants in the active flight remains constant. The procedure is repeated for each height until only 12 contestants are left. There shall be a maximum number of five competitors to begin an active flight. Competitors shall be assigned by the event judge as they appear on the event card.
Example: If competitors A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, and N were entered, the first five (A, B, C, D, and E) would be grouped to begin competition. F would be moved into the continuing flight whenever one of the competitors cleared the height, passed the remaining turns at that height or was eliminated. G would be the next competitor to move into the continuing flight under the same conditions and would be followed by H, I, J, K, L, M, and N, in order. This procedure would be repeated for each height, with five the maximum number to begin an active flight. The competitors would be assigned in order as they appear on the event card.
Long Jump
(For preliminaries in each class)
THE ENTIRE LONG JUMP COMPETITION WILL BE HELD ON FRIDAY. TWO RUNWAYS WILL BE USED. SEE SCHEDULE FOR TIME OF EVENT. PLEASE NOTE THIS CHANGE AS IN PREVIOUS YEARS THE BOYS PRELIMS AND FINALS WERE HELD ON FRIDAY AND THE GIRLS PRELIMS AND FINALS WERE HELD ON SATURDAY. All jumps shall be measured in linear measurement to the lesser ¼" and shall be considered in determining places. It would be very rare to have a tie for any place. If two contestants have the same best jump, the tie is broken by whomever has the second best jump. For example, contestant A and contestant B each have 16'5" as their best jump which places them in a "tie" for 2nd place. The tie is broken by determining who has the second best attempt. In this case, contestant B's second best effort is 16'2" while contestant A's second best effort is 15'8". Contestant B would get 2nd place and contestant A would get 3rd place.
All preliminary competition in the long jump will be conducted in flights. To be eligible to participate in the finals, a competitor must have had at least one legal jump in the preliminaries.
Finals for the 8 contestants having the best jumps in this event for each class (as listed in the state order of events) shall be held immediately following the completion of the preliminaries for that class. Finalists shall compete in the reverse order of preliminary performance, in single rotation, so that the best qualifier will compete last. Two jumps in finals for each contestant.
Shot Put
(For preliminaries in each class)
There will be one ring used at the state meet. All practice and official puts shall be made only with shots provided by IESA. All puts shall be measured in linear measurements to the nearest lesser ¼" and considered in determining places. It would be very rare to have a tie for any place. If two contestants have the same best put, the tie is broken by whomever has the second best put. For example, contestant A and contestant B each have 32'5" as their best attempt which places them in a "tie" for 2nd place. The tie is broken by determining who has the second best attempt. In this case contestant B's second best effort is 26'2" while contestant A's second best effort is 25'8". Contestant B would get 2nd place and contestant A would get 3rd place.
All preliminary competition shall be conducted in flights. All throws shall be recorded. To be eligible to participate in the finals, a competitor must have had at least one legal throw in the preliminaries.
Finals for the 8 contestants having the best throws in this event for each class (as listed in the state order of events) shall be held immediately following the completion of the preliminaries for that class. Finalists shall compete in the reverse order of preliminary performance, in single rotation, so that the best qualifier will compete last. In finals, each contestant shall have two throws. If the contestant has thrown a legal attempt, the judge must call "mark" each time. Any contestant who leaves the circle before "mark" is called shall have that throw considered as a foul. Contestants must exit the back half of the ring and be in control when they exit.
Discus Throw
(For preliminaries in each class)
There will be one ring used at the state meet. All practice and official throws shall be made only with a disc provided by IESA. All throws shall be measured in linear measurement to the nearest lesser inch and used in determining places. It would be very rare to have a tie for any place. If two contestants have the same best put, the tie is broken by whomever has the second best put. For example, contestant A and contestant B each have 132'5" as their best attempt which places them in a "tie" for 2nd place. The tie is broken by determining who has the second best attempt. In this case contestant B's second best effort is 126'2" while contestant A's second best effort is 125'8". Contestant B would get 2nd place and contestant A would get 3rd place.
All preliminary competition shall be conducted in flights. All throws shall be recorded. To be eligible to participate in the finals, a competitor must have had at least one legal throw in the preliminaries.
