Match Comments: In what will go down as one of the all-time classic championship matches, the Stags of Hartsburg-Emden outlasted the Bobcats of Lowpoint-Washburn, 25-14, 24-26, 26-24 before a packed house Tuesday night to claim the IESA 7th Grade Class 1A state volleyball championship. The match was a terrific display of volleyball by both teams and the sportsmanship displayed by both teams and crowds was first class. The Stags had their way in game 1 as they won by a convincing score of 25-14. The second game appeared to be going to Hartsburg as well but Lowpoint-Washburn came roaring back to finally gain a tie at 19 and eventually took a 20-19 lead when the Stags were unable to return serve. A time out by Hartsburg followed and the Bobcats kill attempt on the next volley went long to knot the score at 20. Hunter Langley then served 3 straight service points including one ace to give the Stags what seemed like a sure fire championship as they led 23-20. However, there was no quit in the Bobcats as they scored the next two service points to be down one at 23-22. A side out point for the Stags brought them to within one point of the title at 24-22 but the next serve sailed long to give life to Lowpoint-Washburn. With the score now at 24-23, the Bobcats scored the next three points to claim game 2, 26-24 and send the title match to a final game. The last game was action-packed and not for the faint of heart. The Bobcats led 16-11 when Hartsburg-Emden started their comeback. Kassy Eskew served four straight service points including two aces to bring the Stags to within one at 16-15. A sideout and a service winner for Alexa Damerell gave the Bobcats an 18-15 lead and sideout for the Stags brought them within two at 18-16. Two service winners for Hope Moos tied the game at 18. Demerell then returned a volley that clipped the net and fell in for the Bobcats to give LW a one point lead, 19-18. Kourtney Knecht followed with 3 straight service points including two aces which extended the lead to four at 22-18. The Stags then got four straight points to take a 23-22 lead. A sideout for the Bobcats tied the game at 23 and Taylor Hofstatter got a service winner to give the Bobcats a 24-23 lead with a chance to serve for the championship. However, the Bobcats could not get another point as the Stags got a sideout and two more winners to claim the championship.

This was the 17th state volleyball championship for Hartsburg-Emden. They have won seven 7A titles, three 8A titles, four 7th grade Class 1A titles, and three 8th grade Class 1A titles. Congratulations to Coach Jennifer Hayes who has been the coach for all 17 titles. Lowpoint-Washburn closes their season at 20-4 and will be looking to capture next year's 7th grade title as they started four 6th graders on this year's team.

Congratulations to both teams.
