2005 8AA State Tournament
Glasford Illini Bluffs vs. Chillicothe
The Mustangs of Chillicothe received excellent service play and handed the Tigers of Glasford Illini Bluffs a first round defeat, 15-6, 15-8, in the IESA Class 8AA girls state volleyball tournament at Stephen Decatur. In the first game of the day, Chelsey Stumbaugh of Chillicothe served four straight points to extend the Mustang lead to 5-1. After Paige Pennycuff of Illini Bluffs brought the Tigers back to 5-4, Mikayla Vail served seven consecutive points for Chillicothe to give the Mustangs a comfortable 12-4 lead. Two additional points from Abby Shane and a service winner from Tarin Geber secured the first game. The second game of the match was a bit closer as Paige Frevert, Breanna Arends, Brittney Cross, and Mattie Wall of Illini Bluffs all had service points that allowed the Tigers to take 6-5 lead. However, excellent passing, and strong serves powered the Mustangs to seven consecutive points and Chillicothe took a 12-6 lead. Amanda Klein got IB back to 12-7 before Kathleen Cook and Michelle Earley of Chillicothe served out the match. Illini Bluffs finishes the season at 15-7 while Chillicothe improves to 21-3 and advances to Monday's quarterfinal round.
Lansing Memorial vs. Bolingbrook Jane Addams
It was a match of Mustangs as the Lansing Memorial Mustangs took on the Bolingbrook Jane Addams Mustangs in the second game of the day. Lansing Memorial upended Jane Addams 15-7, 15-3 and advances to Monday's quarterfinal game against Chillicothe. Jane Addams started the first game on a 6-0 run but could only manage one more point in the game. Memorial scored the next 9 points before Jane Addams was able to score another point. Memorial then scored siz more unanswered ponts to win game 1, 15-7. Julie Kotchou played a very defensive front line and had 7 service points for Lansiing Memorial. The second game was all Lansing Memorial as they led 5-0, 8-3, and then scored seven unanswered points to win the second game 15-3.
Champaign Jefferson vs. Normal Kingsley
In a terrific match that featured two evenly matched teams, the Cavaliers of Normal Kingsley outlasted the Champaign Jefferson Jaguars 11-15, 15-11, 15-6 to claim their first ever victory in the IESA state class 8AA volleyball tournament. Kingsley will now advance to the second quarterfinal game on Monday against the winner of the Jacksonville Turner/Mattoon match. Things looked very good for Jefferson early in game 1 as they jumped out to a 6-0 lead before Kingsley closed the gap to 6-4. Middle hitter for Jefferson, 6'1'' Alexis Braghini, was just as effective serving as she was when she made her way to the front row. Braghini served the final two points of the first game. With her team down 0-2 in the second game, Braghini served six straight points to give the Jaguars a 6-2 lead. After a side-out, Sara Dalbey had two more service points for Jefferson as they led Kingsley 8-2 and appeared headed to victory. But, strong net play by 5'8'' middle hitter Christine DeWeert and some excellent serving by Abbie Haberkorn, Heather Gilbert, Kayla Goeken, Shelby Jones, and Ashlee Sang led Kingsley to the second game victory, 15-11. The third and deciding game was almost all Normal Kingsley as they jumped to a quick 3-0 lead only to have Jefferson tie the game at 3 all. Four straight points by the Cavaliers gave them a 7-3 lead and they led the rest of the way with the match winner coming on an ace by Heather Gilbert.
Jacksonville Turner vs. Mattoon
The Wildcats of Mattoon improved their season record to 18-7 with a 15-11, 15-5 victory over Jacksonville Turner which ends its season with a 17-6 record. Mattoon will now face Normal Kingsley on Monday evening. The first game of the match followed many of the earlier day's games as the team that lost the match jumped out to an early lead in one or more of the games. Turner led 5-1 in the first game but Mattoon rallied and gained a 6-5 advantage. The game was tied 6-6, 7-7, and 9-9 before Turner took an 11-9 lead. Mattoon scored the next 6 points to win game one, 15-11. Game two started out much differently for the Wildcats as they started out on 5-0 run and extended the lead to 9-3. After Turner got one point back, Mattoon received two more service points for an 11-4 lead. One final point by Turner closed the gap to 11-5, and then Mattoon scored the final four points of the game for an easy 15-5 second game victory to secure the match.
Peru Washington vs. Bismarck-Henning
She may only be 5'4'' but Hannah Ohl of Bismarck-Henning played like a giant Saturday afternoon as the Eagles improved their record to 26-1 as they defeated Peru Washington 9-15, 15-4, 15-13 to advance to Monday's quarterfinal round. Washington, which was led by 6'0'' middle hitter Jazzy Robbins, ends their season with an 18-7 record. The first game was pretty much decided when Taylor Staus of the Washington Raiders served 10 straight points to give the Raiders an 11-1 lead. Bismarck did not go away easily though as they recovered from the Raiders' fast start to get within five at 14-9 before falling 15-9. Bismarck-Henning jumped out to a 4-0 lead in game two but 3 straight service points by Taylor Staus of Peru Washington cut the deficit to 4-3. However, the Raiders could only manage one more point the rest of the way as Cassie McCorkle, Kim Tuggle, and Kristen Tuggle served winners for the Eagles. Game point in the second game came on a kill by Ohl. The third and deciding game was a thriller with the 5'4'' Ohl going against the powerful 6'0'' Robbins. With the Eagles leading 5-1, Becky Zborowski of the Raiders had four straight service points to tie the game at 5 all. After two side-outs, Samantha Galas scored a service winner when a powerful kill by Robbins gave Washington a brief 6-5 lead. That is when Ohl went to work. She went up against Robbins at the net and secured a side-out. With the side out she moved to the back row and had four consecutive service winners, two of them aces, as the Eagles took a 9-6 lead. Another tremendous kill by Robbins gave a side out to Washington but they could not score with serve. The Eagles scored the next two points, the second coming on an ace by Cassie McCorkle. The 11-6 advantage was short-lived as the dominating Robbins made her presence felt again, this time from the back row as the server. She served six consecutive service winners, four of them aces to give the Raiders a 12-11 lead. A side out was awarded when Peru Washington got into the net and with Kim Tuggle serving, Ohl came up big again. A kill by Ohl tied the score at 12 and after the teams traded side outs, Ellenann Fullen had a service winner for Bismarck-Henning to give the Eagles a 13-12 lead. Ohl had another kill with Fullen serving making the score 14-12 to bring the Eagles to within one point of the victory. Three straight side-outs gave serve to Washington and Galas had a service winner to close the gap to 14-13. When the Raiders got into the net and forced a side out, Ohl served for the game and match. The strong 5'10'' middle hitter Cassie McCorkle made the kill at the net to wrap up the victory, and Bismarck Henning had secured their first-ever match victory in class 8AA.
Homer Glen Homer vs. Stanford Olympia
Stanford Olympia shrugged off a sluggish second game performance to come back strong in the third game to claim a 15-11, 3-15, 15-0 victory over the Mustangs of Homer Glen Homer in the first round of the class 8AA girls volleyball state finals. The third game was dominated by Elizabeth Alberts of Olympia as she served 13 consecutive service points. Olympia will take their 20-1 season record into Monday night's quarterfinal game against Bismarck-Henning while Homer finishes an excellent season at 21-6.
Chatham Glenwood vs. Shelbyville Moulton
The Titans of Chatham Glenwood survived a close call Saturday evening as they held on for a 15-11, 15-11 victory over Shelbyville Moulton to improve to 23-4 and advance to the quarterfinals of the class 8AA IESA girls volleyball tournament. In each game, Glenwood jumped out to a big lead but then had to hold on to secure victory. They led 11-4 at one point in time in the first game and held on for a 15-11 game one victory. In game two, they were up 10 points, at 12-2 and eventually won 15-11.
Herscher Limestone vs. Edwardsville Lincoln
The Lightning of Herscher Limestone thundered past the Wildcats of Edwardsville Lincoln on Saturday evening in the first round of the IESA Class 8AA girls volleyball championship. Limestone outlasted Lincoln 14-16, 15-4, 15-11 to advance to Monday's quarterfinal round. The 15-4 victory in the second game was the result of a strong serve game. Service points were scored by Becky Meyer, Emilie Hendrickson, Amanda Wulff, Brea Ferris, and the game winner by Lauren Ruckman. Limestone jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third game and led 12-4 before Lincoln's Adrienne Kruise served 4 consecutive points to cut the lead in half, 12-8. When Jordan Cousin served two points to make it 14-8 it looked like the match was over but Lauren Hagen came back with three consecutive points to make it 14-11. With Emily Yarno serving for match point, Lauren Ruckman got the match point kill for the Lightning.
Chillicothe vs. Lansing Memorial
Game 1 was evenly matched between the Mustangs of Lansing Memorial and the Mustangs of Chillicothe. Passing proved to be the difference. Abby Shane and Kathleen Cook of Chillicothe made it difficult on the Lansing Memorial passers with their tough serving. Julie Kotchu and Jennifer Twiddy provided the fire power at the net for Lansing Memorial with a kill a piece. Kotchu also registered one block for the Memorial Mustangs.













The dominating serving of Chillicothe clinched game 2 and the match for the Mustangs. Tarin Geber combined with Kathleen Cook for 14 service points. Chillicothe's offensive came alive in the second game. Chelsy Stumbaugh and Mikayla Vail each had 2 kills. Vail's last kill ended the match for the Mustangs. The Mustangs of Lansing Memorial received a great offensive effort from Julie Kotchou with 2 kills and Breanne Podgorski with 3 kills, but it was not enough.













Congratulations to both teams. The Mustangs of Chillicothe advance to the semifinal match on Tuesday at 3:30.
Normal Kingsley vs. Mattoon
Tough serving and dominating net play carried the Cavaliers of Normal Kingsley to victory in game 1. Heather Gilbert led off the game with 9 straight service points for the Cavaliers. Christine DeWeert led the offensive attack for the Cavaliers with 3 kills and 2 blocks. Ashlee Sang, Kayla Goeken, and Abbie Haberkorn each contributed 1 kill a piece for Normal Kingsley.













The Wildcats of Mattoon regrouped in game 2. Sara Bradley led off the Wildcats with 4 service points. Mackenzie Floyd connected for 2 quick kills and a block early in the game for Mattoon. Floyd took over serving and stretched the Wildcat lead to 8-3. Tough serving by Heather Gilbert and a kill from Kristen Cramer brought the Cavaliers to within 1 at 8-9. Michelle Ballinger and Floyd combined serving prowess to push the Wildcat lead to 11-8. Several side-outs were traded before Rhannee Gordon extended the Wildcat lead to 14-10. Cramer pulled off a much needed block for the Cavaliers to put the ball into the hands of Ashlee Sang to serve. Sang started off with an ace and rattled off an additional 3 service points to tie the game at 14-14. Brooke Hustmyer put down a kill for a side out Mattoon. Kayla Goeken placed a tip for a kill and a side out Cavaliers. Abbie Haberkorn served up a point for Kingsley and captured the lead 15-14. After a side out, Brooke Hustmyer tied the game with a service point Mattoon. Kingsley setter Abbie Haberkorn placed another perfect tip for a side out. Heather Gilbert was back to serve for the Cavaliers. Gilbert rattled off an ace to put Kingsley up 16-15. Gilbert finished off the match 17-15.

Bismarck-Henning vs. Stanford Olympia
STqanford Olympia pulled out to a quick lead in game 1 with the serving of Elizabeth Alberts. Alberts captured a 5-0 lead for the Spartans. Kills from Tifani Gordon, Melissa Phillips, and Taylor Eichelberger extended the Spartan lead to 6-2.After trading side outs, Courtney Martin came back to serve for the Olympia. Martin rattled off 5 service points to post a 12-4 lead for Olympia. Hannah Ohl answered with 4 service points for Bismarck-Henning and closed the Spartan lead to 4. Hailley Haning put down a kill for Olympia to put the ball into the hands of Tifani Gordon to serve at 13-9. Melissa Phillips had a kill for a point at 14-9. Gordon aced game point and posted game 1 for the Spartans. Gordon led the Spartans at the net with 4 kills. Melissa Phillips contributed 3 kills and Taylor Eichelberger had 1 kill for the Spartans.













Bismarck-Henning regrouped in game two and scored the first 3 points through the serving of Allison Baker, Cassie McCorkle, and Kim Tuggle. The Spartans battled back through great defensive play. Courtney Martin's tough serving tied the game and pushed the Spartans ahead by 3, 7-4. After a point for Bismarck-Henning, the Spartans team play sparked a side out. Tifani Gordon went back to serve for the Spartans. Gordon zeroed in on the Eagles of Bismarck-Henning and extended the lead to 11-5. Melissa Phillips shut down the net with a huge block. Taylor Eichelberger put down a kill at 13-5. Gordon served up an ace to finish off teh game and match for the Spartans. Taylor Eichelberger led the Spartans offensively in game 2 with 3 kills. Melissa Phillips led contributed 2 kills and 1 block. Tifani Gordon also had 1 kill. The Eagles received their offense from Kim Tuggle and Kristen Tuggle with 1 kill each.













Congratulations to both teams. Stanford Olympia moves on to the semi-final match Tuesday at 4:45.













Chatham Glenwood vs. Herscher Limestone
The Titans of Chatham Glenwood took a commanding lead in game 1 behind the serving of Alyssa Esperum. Esperum opened game 1 with 7 straight serving points. Herscher Limestone answered with a serving run of their own. Lauren Ruckman rattled off 5 service points for the Lightning to cut the Titan lead to 5. Shelbi Tudor took over serving duties for Chatham Glenwood and extended the lead to 14-7. Liz Sterr served out the game for the Titans. Offensive power for the Titans came from Shelbi Tudor and Hannah Werth. Herscher was led offensively by Becky Meyer, Megan O'Connor, and Amanda Wulff.













Again, Chatham Glenwood jumped out to a quick lead in game 2. Liz Sterr led off with 4 service points and posted a 4-1 lead for the Titans. The Lightning relied on steady serving and defense to battle back and take the lead at 8-4. Alyssa Esperum had 4 service points to tie the game at 8-8. Several Titans played aggressive offense at the net to take the lead over the Lightning. Lauren Galloway served out the match for Chatham Glenwood with a block from Hannah Werth to clinch the match. Werth led the Titans offensively in game 2 with 4 kills and 2 blocks. Allie Hogan had 3 kills for Chatham Glenwood. Nicole Layton and Shelbi Tudor each had 1 kill for the Titans. The Herscher Limestone Lightning received their offense from Brea Ferris, Becky Meyer, and Megan O'Connor who each had 1 kill in game 2.

Chillicothe vs. Normal Kingsley
In the first semifinal match-up, Normal Kingsley beat Chillicothe in 3 games. In Game 1 Chillicothe came out fired up and passing the ball very well. Normal Kingsley had a hard time getting into their offense and some bad passing and miscommunications had the game tied at 7 a piece. When the Cavaliers finally got into their offense #13 outside hitter Kayla Goeken led the way. #29 Abbie Haberkorn served 5 straight points and Kayla Goeken had a kill on game point to give Kingsley the win 15-7.













In Game 2 Chillicothe took advantage of the holes in Kingsley's defense with several well placed tips by #30 Chelsy Stumbaugh. The Mustangs took the lead early in the match and never relinquished it.






In Game 3 both teams came out fired up. Chillicothe had the lead at 5-3, but Normal Kingsley's #10 Heather Gilbert served 5 straight points for the Cavaliers. Abbie Haberkorn and Christine DeWeert led the Cavaliers in hitting this game and key kills gave Normal the win and the match.













Chillicothe will play in the 3rd/4th place match at 6pm and Normal Kingsley advances to the Championship match at 7:15.
Stanford Olympia vs. Chatham Glenwood
Game 1 of the 2nd semifinal match-up between Stanford Olympia and Chatham Glenwood was pretty evenly matched. Olympia took a quick 9-4 lead, but Glenwood came back behind the hitting of Hannah Werth. Both teams fought hard for their 11th and 12th points with several rallys and multiple sideouts. #27 Melissa Phillips for Olympia served to give Stanford the lead 13-12. After a sideout #2 Lauren Galloway came in to serve out the match for Chatham. Hannah Werth had a hard driven spike that was blocked out of bounds for the win.













In Game 2 the Titans jumped out to an early lead 12-4, but the Spartans would not go quietly. They fought back to cut the lead to 4 points (9-13) on the hitting of #26 Jaleesa Davis. Hannah Werth took advantage of some overpasses to put the ball down hard for point 14. On the match point Chatham Glenwood again set Hannah Werth in the middle for the kill and the win.













Stanford Olympia will now play Chillicothe in the 3rd/4th place match and Chatham Glenwood will meet Normal Kingsley in the Championship match at 7:15 p.m.
Chillicothe vs. Stanford Olympia
In the Consolation match of the night Stnaford Olympia defeated Chillicothe in 2 games. Game 1 found Stanford was just coming off their semifinal loss to Chatham Glenwood. Olympia took a quick 10-1 lead. Kelly Dubbelde scored 8 straight service points to start the game. #27 Melissa Phillps had several hard driving spikes in the match for Sthanford. Chillicothe never was able to get into any kind of rhythm and Olympia won 15-3.













In Game two of the match Olympia once again came out strong with 4 straight service points byLeann Tammeus, but Chillicothe fought back to tie th ematch at 5 a piece on the serves of #30 Chelsey Stumbaugh. Olympia had several kills to the back right corner of the net and was able to take the lead back 10-6. #26 Jaleesa Davis had a huge block on point 12 and an kill from the middle on point 14.






Chilicothe finished the season in fourth place with a record of 22-5. Stanford Olympia finished in third place with a record of 22-2. This is the first 8AA trophies for both teams.
Normal Kingsley vs. Chatham Glenwood
In the Championship match, Chatham Glenwood defeated Normal Kingsley in 2 games. In game one Chatham Glenwood came out fired up. #15 Shelbi Tudor served 7 straight points with 4 aces. Normal Kinglsey got on the board with a great block by Christine DeWeert, but the Titans Liz Sterr then served 5 straight points with 3 aces to put Glenwood up 12-1. Hannah Werth had 3 kills and an ace for the match. The Titans combined for 8 aces in the match.













Game two started out with 3 straight service points from Kayla Goeken of Normal. The service ended on a kill from Hannah Werth. Chatham's first point of the game also came on the next serve with a kill from Hannah Werth. Christine DeWeert fired back a kill of her own to give the ball back to Kingsley. Chatham then went on a service run with multiple servers and gave themselves an 8-3 lead. Normal Kingsley's Heather Gilbert came in to serve and brought the Cavaliers back to within 2 points. Kayla Goeken had a hard driven spike of the block for a point Cavaliers. Hannah Werth had a nice off speed hit to give the Titans a 10-7 lead. But after multiple sideouts and a couple points for Kingsley the game was all tied up at 10 a piece. Shelbi Tudor of Glenwood was back to serve. Point Titans off a nice double block by Hannah Werth and Meghan Milcic. Kingsley brought the score to within one point, but Hannah Werth came in to serve. Nicole Layton ended the game and match with a block for Chatham.






This was the first state appearance for the Normal Kingsley Cavaliers who finished the season in 2nd place with a record of 19-6. This is Chatham Glenwood's first 8AA state championship. The Titans previously placed fourth in 2002. Chatham finished the season with a record of 26-4.
