2005 7AA State Tournament
East Peoria Central vs. Dwight
The first match at Riverton HS was a back-and-forth battle. East Peoria Central got out to an early lead over the Redbirds of Dwight. Kolby Hoffman of Dwight had key kills to bring her team back into the game and the lead. Erika Benson contributed 8 straight service points for Dwight to tie the game and capture the lead. Hoffman ended the game for the Redbirds with a kill to the left back corner.













East Peoria Central got out to an early lead in game two. The serving of Emilee Brown kept the Wildcats in the lead. Erica Harper and Kaleigh Hill contributed for some offensive fire-power for East Peoria Central. The Redbirds came up with some excellent defensive plays, but could not overcome an early deficit. Chaney Tambling contributed some key kills for Dwight.













Again, the serving of Emilee Brown set the tone for the Wildcats. Brown had 7 service points early in the game and finished with 8 total service points for game three.













Homer Glen Homer vs. Chatham Glenwood
Game 1 of Match 2 was a serving battle. The Titans of Chatham Glenwood got out to an early lead. Ashley Kulavic contributed a string of points tht built the Chatham Glenwood lead to 9. Homer Glen Homer's Carly Malacina dominated the Mustang attack through key kills during the game. Malacina won a joust at the net to bring back the serve to the Mustangs late in the game. However, the serving of Chatham Glenwood's Alexa Frank proved to be too much for the Mustangs. Frank finished game 1 with an ace.













Again, it was serving that set the tone for game 2. Abby Cress and Ashley Kulavic combined for 11 points to push an early lead for the Titans. Erin Fleischacker capped the win for Chatham Glenwood with an ace.
Rantoul Eater vs. Jacksonville Turner
Game 1 of Match 3 was all defense. Both teams played aggressive defense and relied on aggressive serving. Jacksonville Turner's Hannah Lee reeled off two different serving streaks to cap the first game for the Titans. The Titans had a balanced offensive attack, receiving multiple kills from Brittany Burgess, Brooke Beets, and Kate Fox. The offensive power for the Bulldogs of Rantoul Eater came from Madison Caraver, Bridget Schlueter, and Chasity Cross. Cross also led the Bulldogs in service points.













Game 2 was a thriller. Serving streaks were the key for both teams. Jacksonville Turner got off to an early lead through the combined serving efforts of Brooke Beets and Aubrey Burt. The Bulldogs answered with a serving streak of their own from Kristina Schlosser. Jacksonville Turner's Beets came up with a big kill to keep the Titans scoring alive. Shana Calhoun tipped the ball for a Bulldog kill and put the ball back into Rantoul Eater's hands. This proved to be key for the Bulldogs. Corrie Magrini rattled off 6 points to put Rantoul Eater up by 2. The Titans got the ball back and Beets served 3 points to put the Turner up by 1. A kill by the Bulldog's Cross tied the score at 15. After a side-out kill from Taylor Hinton, the Titans relied on Ally Smith to serve out the match.
Manteno vs. Pana JHS
Manteno's servers kept Pana off balance in both games, and used the all-around play of Nina Zalewski to a 15-2, 15-9 win over Pana. The unbeaten Panthers ran their record to 25-0. Pana bowed out with a 21-4 record.






Game 1 -- Nina Zalewski served the first seven points for Manteno in game 1, including three straight aces as the Panthers rolled to a 7-0 lead before Pana could get a sideout. Manteno went ahead 9-1 when a kill by Pana's Kristen Cantrell was nullified when she went into the net. Pana got its last point immediately thereafter when Manteno's Rebecca Giles hit long. Then Manteno got two ace serves from Alicia Simon into the middle, and after a sideout, scored four straight points to close out the 15-2 win. Aryn Newson served the last four points, and Nina Zalewski pounded home a kill for the final point.






Game 2 -- Manteno broke from a 2-2 tie with Alicia Simon serving as the Panthers roared to a 7-2 lead before Pana called timeout. Manteno increased the lead with Simon serving to take an 11-2 lead. In the flurry, Simon got four aces. Pana stopped the bleeding but it was shortlived. Back came manteno with Nina Zalewski serving an ace off the back middle to make it 12-2. Then Pana's Michelle Day served for three points, the last an ace, and Manteo called tme out, got the sideout, and then got a point off an ace serve from Allie Newson for a 13-5 lead. Pana's Katie Lees soared for a sideout that set up a Panther serve from Alyson Alde for a 13-6 deficit. The two teams traded sideouts and Pana's Megan DeWerff bristled in successive aces and a kill by Katie Lees cut the Panther deficit to 13-9. Allie Newson lofted a shot that fell in for a sideout for Manteno and that set up the final two points for Manteno. The last point was scored when Aryn Newson hit off blockers from the left side for the final 15-9 margin.
Mason City Illini Central vs. Mattoon
Mighty mite setter Michelle Glenn was flawless in directing Mattoon's offense, and her funky floater serve baffled Easton Illini Central's backliners as Mattoon took the match 15-0, 15-10. Listed as 5-0, Glenn was all over the court and her sets allowed teammates Kayla Patrem and Kara Salmon many scoring opportunities.Mattoon takes a 20-3 record into the quarterfinals Tuesday. Ilini Central bowed out at 18-5.













Game 1 -- Mattoon's Kara Salmon served the Wildcats to a 2-0 lead as Michele Glenn scored the first point on a running dink shot and Kayla Patrem foll,owed with a kill in the middle. That set the tone for the game. After an exchange of two sideouts, Mattoon's Kayla Patrem aced her serve for a 3-0 lead and got another ace at the backline for a 4-0 margin. Mattoon pecked away to go ahead 6-0 and then the flood gates opened with Kara Salmon serving. The Wildcats ran off four points to take a 10-0 lead. Following one sideout, Raynae Hutchinson served for Mattoon and was credited with five straight points. During the action, two of the serves were not returned n three hits, another was an ace, and on the other two 5-0 mighty mite setter Michelle Glenn put the ball perfectly for kills by Kara Salmon and Kayla Patrem.













Game 2 -- Easton ended the scoring drought with the first four points. Julie Shelabarger served for the first two points and Haylie Stone got the next two points on ace serves. Mattoon tied the game at 4-4, then went ahead on an ace serve by Caitlin Hickey. An ace from Easton Illini Central's Julie Shelabarger made it 5-5. With the score 6-6, Mattoon's Michelle Glen took over at serve and banged out six straight points. A kill by Bailiegh Basham gave Mattoon at 7-6 lead it never relinquished. The next two serves were not returned n three hits. Then a Wildcat return f\dropped in for point No. 10. Glenn aced the next serve down the middle and she then put a slap shot down the right side just inside the sideline for a 12-6 lead. Illini Central was not done as Taylor Sisk served for three straight points to cut the deficit to 12-9. It went to 13-10 in favor of Mattoon. Kara Salmon then rifled in an ace serve for a 14-10 margin. Illini Central got a sideout but Glenn hit another push spike shot into the sideline for a Mattoon sideout. Raynae Hutchinson aced the final serve for the 15-10 game score.
Lansing Memorial vs. Champaign Jefferson
Champaign Jefferson used the one-two punch at the net of 5-5 left-handed spiker Cori Harris and 5-8 Melanie Moore, and some of the most blistering serves of the first round to hold off Lansing Memorial 15-8, 15-9. Champaign Jefferson takes an 18-5 record into its quarterfinal matchup against Mattoon (20-3). Lansing Memorial finished with a 21-4 record.













Game 1 -- Champaign Jefferson used the blistering serve of Melanie Moore to break from a 4-0 lead to an 8-0 margin and then hold off Lansing Memorial. Moore knocked down Memorial's Amanda Rogan with a bullet serve to make the score 7-0. At 8-1, Jefferson's Molly Slough took over serving and she belted home three serves, a ace sandwiched between two shots that could not be returned in three hits. Memorial's Amanda Maricinish got into the serving frenzy and plopped in three straight aces to cut the deficit to 11-4. It went to 11-5 before sideout, and then 12-5 when Memorial's Brittani Armstrong took over at serve. Armstrong hit three straight aces in the mid backline to narrow the deficit to 12-8. Then Jefferson's Cori Harri served the last three points of the game, with No. 13 an ace, No. 14 a hit into the net by Memrial's Molly Malloy, and No. 15 another rocket shot ace.













Game 2 -- Lansing Memorial jumped out to a 6-1 lead behind the serving of Alexandrea Rivera and Brittani Armstrong. Rivera served for 4 points and Armstrong 2 points. Then Champaign Jefferson's 1-2 middle punch of Cori Harris and Melanie Moore sparked the comeback by the Jaguars. Trailing 7-4, with Melissa Qualls serving, Jefferson got a block from Moore and an ace from Quals to cut the deficit to 7-5. After a sideout, Jefferson's Amanda Rogan served for five straight points and a 9-7 Jefferson lead. Included in the service segment was one ace and a block for point by Moore. More served for Jefferson's 10th point with a spinning ace infront of the backline. Memorial cut the deficit to 10-9 and a series of six straight sideouts followed. Jefferson's Melissa Qualls served three points for a 13-9 lead and Melanie Moore capped it off with two serves for point on a dink by teammate Molly Slough and a slap spike from Cori Harris.
Carlinville vs. Normal Parkside
Normal Parkside servers kept Carlinville off balance, racking up 19 ace serves out of the team's 30 points as the Pythons took a 15-8, 15-11 first round win. Parkside got 10 of its 15 points in the first game on ace serves and nine of its 15 in the second game with aces. Six different players produced the aces for Parkside. Erin McGinnin led with 5, all in the first game. Allison Stover got 4, all in the second game. Lindsey Sturm added four with three in game one. Jennifer Harr had two in the first game and Erin Huddleston had one in the second game. Jozette Spaid led Carlinville with five ace serves. Parkside advances to the quarterfinals to meet Metamora Germantown Hills (18-5) with a 19-4 record. Carlinville finished at 21-3.













Game 1 -- Carlinville got the first point of the game when Ali goodman's serve was not returned. Then Parkside reeled off the next eight points to take an 8-1 lead. In the spurt, Erin McGinnis served for six of the points and five in a row (from points 2-6) were aces. Erin Huddleston was serving for the next two points, the last when Carlinville's Jozette Spaid hit a return into the net. After a sideout, Carlinville cut the deficit to 8-5. Then Parkside's Lindsey Sturm served four aces in a row to make it 12-6. Jozette Spaid countered for Carlinvlle with a pair of aces in a three-point serving stretch before Parkside's Jennifer Harr closed out the game with a pair of aces before Erin McGinnis got the final point of the game with a running push push dink.













Game 2 -- Carlinville jumped ahead 2-0 in this one, but Parkside surged back to take a 5-2 lead, scoring on an ace serves from Kaitlin Reid (2-1 deficit) and Allison Stover (5-2 lead. In between was a spike for a point from Stover. The 5-foot-9 Stover and 5-9 McGinnis battled Carlinville's 5-9 Elizabeth Kelly and the 5-6 Jozette Sapid at the net throughout the first part of game 2. Eventually, they wore her down. An ace serve by Carlinville's Camryn Walton off McGinnis in the middle pulled the Warriors to within 7-6. Erin Huddleston then got to serve for Parkside and she served for two points including an ace. After a sideout, Allison Stover got to serve for Parkside and she served for five straight points, including three aces, for a 14-6 Python lead. That set the stage for a brief spurt from Carlinville led by Jozette Spaid. She served for four points, including three aces. A push dink for a sideout by Parkside's McGinnis set up the final Python point, an ace from Lindsey Sturm and the 15-11 final margin.
Germantown Hills vs. Bolingbrook Brooks
Metamora Germantown Hills held off a furious comeback by Bolingbrook Brooks in the second game to claim the last first round match of the day with a 15-6, 15-13 win. In a match that featured great series of volleys and strong net play by both teams, Metamora Germantown Hills used the strong play of Emily Husted and Lindsay Herman to run its record to 18-5 and advance to the quarterfinals to face Normal Parkside (19-4). Bolingbrook Brooks suffered its first loss of the year and ended at 14-1.













Game 1 -- Germantown Hills' Brittany Kiefner served for the first three points and the Warriors went up 5-0 before Bolingbrook Brooks scored. Neither team could mount a sustained offense and the score was 9-6 in favor of Germantown Hills when Brooks' Lanita Hammond scored on a kill from the left side. That's when Maddie Watson went to work serving for Germantown Hills. Her ace made it 10-6, then teammate Lindsay Herman scored on a kill (11-6) and again on a fake set that she flipped over the net (12-6). Watson's next serve was not returned in three hits and Herman followed with another kill (14-6). Watson ended it with an ace.













Game 2 -- Brooks jumped ahead 3-0 before Germantown Hills' Lindsay Herman served a pair of aces and Brooks' Veronica Drase hit long to give the Warriors a 4-3 lead. Brooks went ahead 6-5 but a kill by Herman tied it at 6-6. An ace serve from Justine Phillips moved Germantown Hills ahead 7-6 and Phillips got another serve unreturned for an 8-6margin. Germantown Hills took the margin to 10-7 before Brooks charged back. with Veronica Drase serving, the Bulldogs reeled off five straight points for a 12-10 lead. She had two aces in the spurt, and two times Germantown Hills frontliners bumped the ball over the net but out. A bump by the Warriors' Krista Polanin tied it at 12-12. After a sideout, Krista Polanin took over service. She aced two in a row for a 14-12 lead and then it appeared Brooks let the ball drop on its side of the net for a point, but a netful was called on Germantown Hills. Rebecca Stone hit one out on a return for the Warriors of a shot by Brooks' Lanita Hammond to make it 14-13. A spike for sideout from the Warrors' Lindsay Herman then set up an ace serve from Justine Phillips for the clincher.
East Peoria Central vs. Chatham Glenwood
The Titans of Chatham Glenwood used a strong serve game and excellent net play to defeat East Peoria Central in the first quarterfinal game of the IESA 7AA state girls volleyball tournament. Glenwood jumped out to an early 7-1 lead in game 1 of the match before Sydney Marshall of Central served three straight service winners to close the gap to 7-4. However, Glenwood answered the challenge with six straight points of their own, five of them being served by Ali McGrath. After the teams sideouts and a couple of points Jenna Taft served the game winner. In the second game, Glenwood scored the first two points, but then Erica Harper served 7 straightpoints to give Central a 7-2 lead. Glenwood scored the next six points, five of them coming when Brianna Johnson was serving. With the scored tied at 9 all, Sydney Marshall gave Central a 12-9 lead. However, the Titans rallied behind the serving of Kailey Osborne, Courtney Morris, Alexa Frank, and Chelsea Payne to give the Titans the second game, 15-13, and the match.
Jacksonville Turner vs. Manteno
Manteno staged a furious second game comeback to win the match 15-10, 15-13. The Panters of Manteno trailed 8-0 in the second game and trailed 13-8 at one point in the second game. Manteno then scored seven unanswered points to win the game and the match. Manteno advances to Wednesday's semi-final game against Chatham Glenwood.
Mattoon vs. Champaign Jefferson
The Mattoon Wildcats advance to the semifinals of the IESA Class 7AA girls volleyball state tournament with a convincing 15-8, 15-7 victory over the Champaign Jefferson Jaguars. Mattoon jumped out to a 10-3 lead in game 1. Scoring service points for the Wildcats were Kara Salmon, Reynae Hutchinson, Kayla Paterm, and Michelle Glenn. Game two followed a similar pattern as game 1 although Jefferson did tie the score at 5 all at one point in time. Mattoon extended the lead to 14-6 before closing out the match with a service winner to make the final score 15-7.
Normal Parkside vs. Germantown Hills
Not even a minor wreck on the way to the state tournament site could stop the Normal Parkside Pythons as they eased past Metamora Germantown Hills 15-7, 15-11 to advance to the semifinal round of the 7AA IESA girls state volleyball tournament. No one was hurt in the minor wreck and the Pythons showed no ill-effects from the mishap. The second game proved to be a thriller as Germantown Hills jumped out to an 11-5 lead before Parkside scored the next 10 points to win the game and the match.
Chatham Glenwood vs. Manteno
Mateno came into the semifinal match fired up. They scored 6 unanswered points before Glenwood was able to get on the scoreboard in Game 1. #6 Aryn Newson for the Panthers served 5 straight points to put Manteno up 13-1. #31 Ali McGrath for Chatham Glenwood gave the Titans a breath of hope as she fired off 4 straight service points, but the Panthers were too much for Chatham and #8 Nicole Martin served out the match 15-5.






In Game 2 Manteno came out tough again as they went up on Glenwood 10-3, but after a sideout #11 Ashley McGrath for the Titans had a huge block at the net -point Chatham Glenwood. Glenwood cut the lead to 12-8, but again the Panthers proved to be too strong and #8 once again served out the match for Mantno 15-8.






Manteno remains undefeated (27-0) as they enter the championship match tonight at 7:15 . Chatham Glenwood will play in the 3rd/4th place match at 6:00pm.
Mattoon vs. Normal Parkside
Mattoon started Game 1 with 5 unanswered points from several servers. #11 Kaitlin Reid served 6 straight serves ending on and ace to put Parkside up 6-5. After a sideout. #25 Erin Huddleston for Parkside served another 6 straight points with an ace to put the Pythons up 12-5. Mattoon was able to put two more points on the board before #8 Jennifer Harr came in to serve out the match 15-7. #32 Erin McGinnis for Parkside had several key kills throughout the game.






Game 2 Seesawed back and forth as Mattoon finally found a rythm. Normal Parkside had several key miscommunications at the end of the match. #8 Reynae Hutchinson for Mattoon served out the match 16-15, 17-15.






In Game 3 Normal Parkside went up 5-2, but #1 Caitlin Hickey from the Wildcats served three straight to tie up the match. #33 for Mattoon Bailiegh Basham served the next three points to put the Wildcats up 8-6. The game seesawed back and forth with both teams scoring a point or two before hitting the net or out of bounds on their next serves. When Parkside went up 13-12 #21 Kayla Patrem for Mattoon had a ket kill to give the Wildcats another shot of taking the lead, but th Pythons were too much. #11 Kaitlin Redi served and ace to put Parkside up 14-12 and finally served out the match 15-12.






Normal Parkside advances to the championship match with a record of 21-4.
Chatham Glenwood vs. Mattoon
In the Consolation match of the tournament Mattoon who had just finished their 3 game semifinal match just never seemed to find their rythym. Chatham Glenwood quickly went up on the Wildcats. #4 Abby Cress served out the game with 8 straight service points. It was much of the same in Game 2 for the Titans as they combined a team service game to close out the match 15-1.






Mattoon finished the season fourth place in the state with a record of 21-5. This is the first state tournament trophy for the Wildcats. Chatham finished the season in third place with a record of 26-4. Congratulations to both teams.
Manteno vs. Normal Parkside
In Game 1 of the State Championship game Normal Parkside came out strong and was leading 5-1 early on. Manteno finally got in a groove and tied the game at 8 a piece. #8 Jennifer Harr for Parkside served two aces to put Normal up 12-8. #22 Alexa Pavlik for Manteno tied the game up again at 13, but Parkside's Kaitlin Reid served the game out 15-13.






In Game 2 of the match, Manteno came out fighting and went up 4-0 before Parkside got on the scoreboard. #6 Aryn Newsom served points 7-9 to put the Panthers up 9-2. Parkside started to chip away at the lead shortly. 2 points and a sideout and then two more points put them down 10-6. #21 Lindsey Sturm tied the game at 12 a piece. Manteno's #24 Nina Zalewski gave the Panthers one more point, but after a sideout #8 Jennifer Harr served out the match 15-13.






Manteno finished the season 27-1 bringing home the schools first state trophy. Normal Parkside finished the season with a record of 22-4. This is Coach Dawn Kelly and the Parkside Pythons first 7AA State Championship.
