2004 8AA State Tournament
Washington MS vs. Charleston
In the first half of play Washington MS dominated play. The Panthers outscored Charleston 15-3 in the 2nd quarter. Washington MS has three players with 6 points each. In the second half Charleston started with 4 quick points, but Washington was able to find their groove quickly and answered with 6 points and outscored Charleston 12-6 in the third quarter. Kesley Doglio of Washington was the leading scorer for the game with 11 points. Two other Panthers finished the game 10 points each.
Pontiac JHS vs. Ottawa Shepherd
Both teams played a hard fought first half. Ottawa entered the locker room with a 15-12 lead at halftime. Lexi Johnson of Ottawa Shepherd and Kristin Sawyer of Pontiac both drained two three point baskets to lead all scorers with 6 points each. In the second half the teams continued to keep it close. both teams scored 7 points in the 3rd quarter. In the fourth quarter Ottawa held their lead and made 8 of 13 free throws to win the game. Ottawa remains undefeated and advances to the semi finals Monday night.
Quincy vs. Canton Ingersoll
In a close half the teams entered the lockeroom tied 23-23. Chloe Barnes of Quincy had 9 first quarter points and 7 second quarter points to lead all scorers for the half with 16 points. Hannah Konhorst for Canton led her team with 12 first half points. Canton came out of the lockeroom and outscored Quincy 16-6 in the third wuarter. But everything turned around in the fourth. Chloe Barnes had 8 of her 28 game high points in the fourth quarter and Quincy outscored Canton 15-4 to win by one point.
Calumet City Dirksen vs. Chatham Glenwood
Chatham outscored the Lady Senators of Calumet City 16-1 in the first quarter and 12-6 in the second quarter. Dirksen was never able to put anything together agains the Titans of Glenwood. Hannah Werth of Chatham was the leading scorer with 22 points. 16 of those points came in the first half. Chatham Glenwood advances to Monday night play with a record of 22-0.
St. Joseph vs. Mattoon
Mattoon jumped out to a quick lead in the first half outscoring the St. Joseph Panthers 15-4 in the first quarter. Aubrey Welch of St. Joseph finished the game with 12 points while Michelle Ballinger for Mattoon was the leading scorer of the game with 16 points. Michelle scored all of her teams' 10 points in the 4th quarter.
Bellwood Roosevelt vs. Taylorville JHS
Taylorville won a thriller 43-40 over Bellwood Roosevelt. Taylorville led 15-12 after the first quarter, but Roosevelt fought back to tie the ball game at half. In the second half the lead changed hands several times. With Roosevelt getting a look at a three point basket to tie the game at the buzzer. Taylorville players Toni Beeler (7-8) and Joylynn Stewart (8-8) combined to go 14-15 from the free throw line. Joylynn was the leading scorer of the game with 21 points. Dominque White of Bellwood finished the game with 16 points. Taylorville advances to Monday night with a record of 23-1.
Markham Prairie-Hills vs. Herscher Limestone
At the end of the first quarter the teams were tied 7-7. Markham Prairie Hills outscored Herscher Limestone 14-2 in the 2nd quarter to go ahead 21-9. Brenda Johnson of Prairie Hills leads all scorers with 8 pts. In the second half Herscher played Markham a bit closer, but was unable to make-up their first half points. Brenda Johnson of Markham ended up with 5 three point baskets for the night.
Stanford Olympia vs. Edwardsville Lincoln
The first half was dominated by Stanford Olympia hustle. The Lincoln Wildcats went into the lockerroom down 21-9. The second half was more evenly match, but the Wildcats we unable to cover their first half losses. Courtney Martin of the Spartans was the leading scorer of the game with 19 points.
Washington MS vs. Ottawa Shepherd
Ottawa Shepherd got out to an early 9-2 lead in the first quarter. They continued to build on their lead in the early part of the second quarter. Washington battled back late in the second quarter to finish the first half down by 6. The Rams of Ottawa Shepherd fought off a strong second half attack and finished with a 5 point victory. Alyssa Carlson led the Rams with 11 points. Jaquie Flanagan led the Panthers of Washington MS with 9 points.
Quincy vs. Chatham Glenwood
Chatham Glenwood and Quincy had a back and forth battle in the first half. Chloe Barnes led the Comets of Quincy in the first half with 8 points. Quincy's Shelby Wires contributed two three-pointers. Chatham Glenwood was led by Hannah Werth in the first half. Erin Egolf had two three-pointers which added to the 24-16 Titan lead. Chatham pulled to an early lead in the third quarter. Quincy dug in and pulled to within 5. Hannah Werth led the Titans of Chatham Glenwood with 16 points. Chloe Barnes of Quincy led all scorers with 20 points.
Mattoon vs. Taylorville JHS
Taylorville got out to an early lead in the first quarter with a balanced contribution from the starting lineup. Mattoon battled back and ended the first half down by 3.
Markham Prairie-Hills vs. Stanford Olympia
The Spartans of Stanford Olympia roared out to an early lead in the first half. Jalessa Davis led the Spartan scoring in the first half with 7 points. Kristen Marshall of Markham Prairie-Hills led the Lady Mustangs first half effort with 3 points. The Lady Mustangs of Prairie-Hills came out strong in the second half. The Stanford Olympia lead was cut to 4 before finishing with a nine point lead. Courtney Martin led the Spartans of Stanford Olympia with 9 points. Kristen Marshall also led Markham Prairie-Hills with 9 points.






The Illinois Elementary School Association (IESA) Board of Directors met in a telephone conference call Monday (Dec. 13) and penalized Markham Prairie-Hills for noncompliance with IESA By-law 2.090 which states: ''It is the clear obligation of students, school staff, boards of education, and all other official representatives of member schools in all interscholastic relationships to practice and promote the highest principles of sportsmanship and the ehtics of competition, and it is the obligation of the member school to maintain proper crowd control in all interschoalstic activities... The Board of Directors shall have full authority to penalize any member school, any of whose representatives or spectators may be adjudged upon competent evidence to have violated these obligations.'' Three members of the Markham Prairie-Hills team who were on the team's roster and at Chatham Glenwood for Saturday's first round have been suspended from further participation in the 2004 IESA Eighth Grade Class AA State Final Tournament. Under IESA rules, there can be no additions or substitutions to a school's roster once the state series gets under way.
Ottawa Shepherd vs. Chatham Glenwood
In a battle of two teams with 23-0 records heading into the game, Chatham Glenwood sizzled on offense with a stampede of fast break layups to take a 14-2 lead after one quarter and 21-9 at halftime over Ottawa Shepherd. Glenwood in a 24-second spurt midway through the first quarter broke from a 3-2 lead to take an 8-2 lead. Allison Anderson took a long pass from Erin Egolf and went in for a breakaway layup at 3:41 in the 1st quarter. Hannah Werth scored in the paint at 3:29 for a 7-2 margin and added a free throw at 3:17 for the 8-2 lead. Glenwood's last three baskets of the quarter were on a pair of Werth layups and another Allison Anderson breakaway layup. Ottawa Shepherd missed its shots in each of its last eight trips down the court in the first quarter. Glenwood built the lead to 20-4 before Shepherd got a little untracked. Alyssa Carlson hit a three-pointer at 2:47 of the second quarter to cut the Shepherd deficit to 20-7, and Lauren Sladek hit a rebound jumper to make it 21-9 at the half. Hannah Werth led Glenwod with 10 points, Egolf added 5, including a three-pointer in the first quarter. Alyssa Carlson led Shepherd with 5 at halftime.






In the second half, Chatham Glenwood outscored Otawa Shepherd 20-2 and stopped the Rams' offense cold with its pressue defense. Again the Titans produced a scoring spurt, this time in the final 1:55 of the third quarter. Leading 27-11, Glenwood got a three-pointer from Erin Egolf at the 1:55 mark, a long-pass fastbreak layup from Allison Anderson off a great pass from Egolf at 0:16 and with :0.3 to go, Abby Vorreyer canned a trey from the top of the circle for a 35-11 lead after three quarters. Ottawa Shepherd was led in scoring by Alyssa Carlson with 5 points, all coming in the first half. Shepherd moves into Thursday night's 6:00 p.m. third place game with a 23-1 record. Chatham Glenwood was led in scoring by 6-0 eighth grader Hannah Werth with 18 points on seven field goals and 4-8 free throw shooting. Allison Anderson and Erin Egolf each added 8 points for the Titans. Ghatham Glenwood takes a 24-0 record into Thursday night's 7:30 p.m. championship game. Chatham Glenwood is seeking to become the ninth unbeaten 8AA champion since the two class system went into effect in 1990. Last year, Chatham Glenwood's 7AA team -- which is the same team this year in 8AA -- won the state championship with a 27-0 record. This group of Titans are riding a 51-game winning streak heading into Thursday night's title game.
Taylorville JHS vs. Stanford Olympia
Once-beaten Taylorville JHS jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first quarter and pushed its advantage to 14-5 after the first quarter. Tori Beeler scored seven of the nine first quarter points. Taylorville increased its lead to 23-7 with 1:01 left in the 2nd quarter scoring six straight points on a runner in the lane by Megan Skinner, a baseline jumper from Skinner and single free throws from Joylynn Stewart and Tori Beeler. Stanford Olympia made a run at the end of the second quarter to cut its deficit from 23-7 to 23-13 on a layup from Courtney Martin, followed by a free throw from Keri Leach and martin's trey from the left side of the key. Martin led the Spartans with 10 points, 3 in the first quarter and 7 in the second quarter. Beeler led Taylorville with 9 at halftme and tewart followed with 8. In the second half, once-beaten Stanford Olympia narrowed its 10-point halftime deficit to 23-16, but Taylorville's Kelsey Speagle scored on a layup, was fouled and put in the free throw with 2:30 to go in the 3rd quarter to move the lead back to 26-16. Olympia got a pair of free throws from Courtney Martin at 1:39 to cut the deficit to 26-18. Olympia's pressure defense came alive and produced several steals but the Spartans missed three-point shots on successive possessions and they could only get a free throw from Courtney martin at :23.6 left in the third to close to within 26-19. Taylorville's Joylynn Stewart scored on a jumper from the baseline at :03.2 for a 28-19 lead after three quarters. In its first three possessions of the 4th quarter Olympia missed three-point shots but Taylorville could not counter until the Lady Terriers' Megan Skinner ramed in a trey from the left corner at the 5:00 mark for a 31-19 lead. Olympia kept firing three-point shots and could not connect. The Spartans were 0-for-9 from the arch in the final 7:39 of the game. Courtney Martin of Olympia lead all scorers with 17 points, including 6-10 from the foul line, and a three-pointer in the 2nd quarter. Martin scored all six of Olympia's points in the third quarter. Joylynn Stewart led Taylorville with 10 points and Tori Beeler added 9. Stanford Olympia takes a 22-2 record into the third place game against 23-1 Ottawa Shepherd Thursday night at 6:00 p.m. Taylorville will take a 25-1 record into the championship game against 24-0 Chatham Glenwood. The title game is set for 7:30 Thursday. Taylorvile's only loss of the year came Oct. 19 to Chatham Glenwood, 41-37.
Ottawa Shepherd vs. Stanford Olympia
After Ottawa Shepherd tok a 2-0 lead early in the first quarter, Stanford Olympia's Keri Leach fired home a three-pointer from the right side and that started the Lady Spartans on a 30-second scoring spree that gave them a 9-2 lead with 4:52 to go. In the spurt, Jaleena Davis hit two free throws and a rebound layup and Courtney Martin ended the spurt with a steal layup. Ottawa Shepherd cut the deficit to 11-6 after the 1st quarter on a jumper from Alicia Torimoto at 3:26 and a layup from Rachelle Davis at 2:51. Then Olympia's Courtney Martin fired home the Lady Spartans' final two points of the quarter with a fastbreak layup. Alyssa Carlson scored the first two points of the 2nd quarter for Shepherd to pull the Rams to within 11-8. After Olympia jumped to a 14-8 margin, Kelsey Johnson hit 2 free throws and Alyssa Carlson one of two from the line to make it a 14-11 Olympia lead at 3:02. Olympia's Courtney Martin fired home her team's second three-pointer of the game at the 2:13 mark to end the first half scoring and give Olympia a 17-11 lead. Olympia socred the first basket of the third quarter -- a steal jumper in the lane by Jordan Becker -- and then Shepherd turned on the pressure and scored the next seven straight points to tie the score at 19-19 with 1:45 to go. Jalessa Davis hit 1 of 2 free throws at 3:08 to make it 19-12, then Kelsey Johnson hit 1 of 2 FT at 2:33 to make it 19-13. Johnson scored on an inbounds play at 2:29 to cut the deficit to 19-15, she then got a steal layup at 1;55 to make it 19-17. At the 1:45 mark, hyper-active point guard Alyssa Carlson hit a jumper from the left corner to tie the score at 19-19. Olympia got the final four points of the 3rd quarter to lead 24-19 heading into the final 6 minutes. Shepherd's Johnson hit a left side layup off a great feed pass from Carlson to cut the deficit to 24-21. Then at 5:02 Olympia's Jordan Becker bombed in a three-pointer from the top of the circle for a 27-21 margin that grew to the final 12-point victory. Johnson led Shepherd in scoring with 14 points. Three Lady Spartans combined for 29 of their 35 points. Jordan Becker led with 14, Keri Leach added 8 and Courtney Martin added 7. Martin scored all seven of her points n the first half. Ottawa Shepherd ended its season with a 23-2 record. Stanford Olympia finished 3rd in the state at 23-2.
Chatham Glenwood vs. Taylorville JHS
A near capacity crowd was on hand for the rematch of their Oct. 19 game as unbeaten Chatham Glenwood (23-0) faced Taylorville Junior High School (24-1). Glenwood won the regular season game by four points (41-37). Taylorville brought four fan busses. Glenwood's 6-0 Hannah Werth put the Titans in front 2-0 at 5:06 of the first quarter, but Taylorville's Joylynn Stewart hit her second basket in 42 seconds to put the Lady Terriers on top 4-2. The score was tied at 4-4 and 6-6 before Glenwood turned on the offense to take a 14-6 lead after the first quarter. In the spurt, Erin Egolf hit a three-pointer from the right side and Alison Anderson followed with a trey from the same spot at :55.8. Werth's two free throws at :29.5 ended the quarter's scoring. A driving layup by Taylorvile's Megan Skinner cut the defcit to 14-8. Glenwood scored the next eight points for a 22-8 lead and Erin Egolf's left side jumper with under two minutes to go in the half gave Glenwood its 25-11 margin. Glenwood got the ball back with with 1:45 to go in the quarter and held it for a final shot but did not score. Werth led the Titans with 12 points for the first half and Erin Egolf added 8. Joylynn Stewart led Taylorville with 7.






In the second half, Glenwood's defense smothered the Tayorville shooters and held the Lady Terriers to only seven second half points. Taylorville scored the first three points of the third quarter and then went scoreless until the 2:17 mark of the fourth quarter when Joylynn Stewart put in a jumper from the circle. Taylorville was held to just those three points for the first 9:47 of the 12-minute second half. Glenwood led 28-14 after three quarters and coasted through the fourth quarter. Taylorville was led by Stewart with 12 points. She finished her four state final games with a total of 65 points. Taylorville finished the season with a 25-2 record, both losse coming to Chatham Glenwood. Hannah Werth led Glenwood with 15 points and she finished the tournament with a total of 71 to lead all scorers. Glenwood finished the season with a 25-0 record and became the 10th unbeaten team in the 8AA tournament since the inception of the class system in 1990. In fact, this same group of Chatham Glenwod players won last year's 7AA crown with a 27-0 record and put together a string of 52 straight games without a loss.
