2004 8A State Tournament
Beecher City vs. Champaign St. Matthew
In the first quarter, the Eagles of Beecher City got off to a 5-0 lead with a balanced scoring effort. Champaign St. Matthew's Alisa Carroll hit a three-point shot with five seconds left to bring her team from behind and to it's one-point victory. Beecher City took an 15-13 lead late in the fourth quarter. Carroll hit a jumper tie it at 15-15. With less than a minute remaining, Beecher City jumped ahead 17-15 setting up Carroll's winning three-pointer. Nicole Gardner led Beecher City with 10 points. Carroll led St. Matthew with 9. St. Matthew takes a 21-3 record into Monday's quarterfinals. Beecher City bowed out at 18-4.
Paris Crestwood vs. Media Southern
The first half was a back and forth battle with Media Southern ending the half 20 to 13. Mirium Rutzen lead the scoring drive for the Raiders of Media. Paris Crestwood battled back late in the 3rd quarter to cut the it to a 4 point game. Mirium Rutzen put Media Southern up by 2 with 4 minutes left in the 4th. With 1:30 left in the 4th, Jill Frisz made 2 free throws to put Crestwood up by 2. Ashley Coffey made a break away lay-up for Media Southern with 6 seconds left to put the Raiders up. Seconds left in the 4th, Rutzen intercepted a long in-bounds pass to seal the win for Media Southern.
Bartonville Monroe vs. Normal Epiphany
Normal Epiphany roared from an 11-11 tie midway through the second quarter to take a 20-15 halftime lead and never looked back. Normal Epiphany's Anna Novario, her team's leading scorer with 10 for the game, scored six of those points in the spurt. Normal Epiphany's swarming defense shut down Bartonville Monroe's offense in the second half, limiting the Flyers to just five points, all in the fourth quarter. Lorin Heiser led Monroe with 16 points, scoring 5 in the first quarter, six in the second and five in the fourth. Jacqui Reinhart added 6 for Epiphany. Monroe bowed out of the tournament with a 16-7 record. epiphany advances to Monday's quarterfinals with a 23-1 record.



























Catlin vs. Tonica
Catlin broke from a 22-22 ties at the 1:14 mark in the third quarter to pull away from Tonica. Mallory Mead hit a layup from the left side with 0:56 to go to give Catrlin a 24-22 lead, which it never relinquised thereafter. A three-pointer from the right side by Mallory Weber pushed the Catlin margin to 27-22 after three. Hannah Wilkins hit a left side jumper for Catlin at the 1:57 mark in the 4th quarter fto build a 33-26 margin. Tonica's Randi Watland hit a trey in the circle with 0:57 left to cut the margin to the final 33-29. Mallory Weber led a balanced Catlin scoring attack with 9 points. Hannah Wilkins added 8 as did Kristin Cox. Brandi Watland led Tonica with 15 points scoring five in each of the 1st, 3rd and 4th quarters. Catlin advances to the quarterfinals with a 20-1 record. Tonica bowed out at 15-10.
Assumption Central A & M vs. Springfield St. Agnes
Springfield St. Agnes jumped to a 10-4 lead after one quarter but Central A&M charged to outscore St. Agnes 15-4 in the second quarter to grab a 19-14 halftime lead. The score was tied at 14-14 late in the second quarter when Central A&M went to work. Andrea Knight put back a missed shot for a 16-14 Central A&M lead with 1:39 to go in the half. At 1:18, Samantha Snyder hit one of two free throws to build the Central A&M lead to 17-14. Snyder's breakaway layup with 3.4 seconds to go in the half made it 19-14. She was fould by St. Agnes' standout seventh grader Demi VanDerWal on the play but miss the free throw. itr was VanDerWal's 2nd foul. VanDerWal and Kelsi Frank each scored 4 points for St. Agnes in the first half. Megan Stringer led Central A&M with 6. St. Agnes' 13-player roster includes eight of the school's IESA Class 7A championship team, which won the 2004 title at Divernon Thursday night. VanDerWal scored 22 points in that title game and ended the 2004 7A tourmanent with 82 points in four games.St. Agnes made 15 of 31 free throws for the game, but poured home 12 of 18 in the fourth quarter to come back from its 19-14 halftime deficit. A jumper from the left side by Brittany Idusuyi with a second left in the third quarter made it 23-22 Central A&M after three quarters. A pair of free throws from Kelsi Frank put St. Agenes ahead 24-23 at the 5:48 mark. A free throw for Central A&M's Megan Stringer tied the game for the last time at 26-26 with 5;09 left. Demi VanDerWal hit a layup for St. Agenes at 4:59 to put the Aces in front for good at 28-26. Then feisty point guard Katie Domagalski canned a pair of free throws twice at 4:29 and 3:29 for a 32-26 St. Agnes lead. VanDerWal added another free throw for a 33-26 margin before Central A&M's Samantha Snyder sandwiched a pair of baseline runners between two Kelsi Frank free throws for St. Agnes to make it 34-30 in favor of St. Agnes with 2:04 to go. Becky Brenneisen hit one free throw at 1:13, Taylor-Ann Yaho canned two FTS at:25.7 and Brenneisen hit one of two Ft at :0.9 for the final 38-32 margin. VanDerWal led St. Agnes with 11 and Frank added 10 for the Aces, who take a 20-4 record into Monday's quarterfinals. Cenrtral A&M finished at 18-5.
Seneca vs. Greenfield
Greenfield jumped on top 3-0 and never trailed in rolling to a 21-9 halftime lead. The Lady Tigers outscored Seneca 9-3 in the first quarter and 11-6 in the second. Leah Pembrook pumped in 11 of






Greenfield's 21 points including a three-pointer from the left of the circle at 5:17, and a fast break layup at 4:48 to make the margin 16-3. Emily Kaufman got Seneca's first points in the second quarter with a layup from the left baseline at 4:02. Katie Mansfield was second in scoring for Greenfield with 4 points. Eden Thomas and Janelle maierhofer shared scoring leadership for Seneca at the half with 4 points each.Greenfield maintained its lead throughout the second half and Seneca was forced to shoot from the three-point range, connecting on only one. Emily Kaufman led Seneca with 10 points and Kelly Dunn added 6. Emily Pembrook led Greenfield with 16, getting 3 in the first, 8 in the second, 1 in the third and 4 in the fourth, where she left the game with about 2 minutes remaining. Greenfield takes a 20-0 record into Monday's quarterfinal game against Springfield St. Agnes. Seneca ended 13-10.
Gifford vs. Winchester
Winchester trailed 4-3 after one quarter, but the Wolverines pressure defense clamped down on Gifford to blank the Eagles in the second quarter. In the meantime, McKea Fisher put in a rebound jumper at 1:38 for a 9-4 Winchester lead and followed that up with a three-pointer from the left of the circle at 1:07 for a 12-4 margin. Geri Stone hit a free throw with :43.4 left to end thye first half scoring for the Wolverines. Morgan Wood scored all four of Gifford's first half points in the first quarter. In the second half, Gifford turn up the offense and outscored Winchester 23-5 to pull away for the win. Gifford scored the first 10 points of the third quarter to take a 14-13 lead at :49.2 on a steal layup from Morgan Wood. Winchester claimed a 15-14 lead at the end of the third on a great steal by Brittany Zenge who fed Geri Stone underneath for a layup with :02.2 remaining in the quarter. Paige Harms then took over for Gifford scoring two baskets and a free throw in the first 2:39 of the 4th quarter to give Gifford a 20-18 lead. At the 1:37 mark, Gifford's Hanna Mennenga put the lid on Winchester's bid to win when he swished a trey from the right corner and a 23-18 lead. McKea Fisher led Winchester with 7 points. The Wolverines finished the year at 16-7. Morgan Wood led Gifford with 8 points. The Eagles take a 14-9 record into Monday's quarterfinals.
Springfield Blessed Sacrament vs. Cuba
Cuba led 6-5 after the first quarter, then Blessed Sacrament ran off five straight points to build a 10-6 lead with 3:42 left. Emily Keller scored Cuba's only points of the quarter at 3:22 to cut Cuba's deficit to 10-8. Ally Boll then scored on a steal layup for Blessed Sacrament at 2:37. Kaeley Luhr hit a jumper from the right side and Ally Boll came back with two free throws at :44.5 for a 16-8 lead. Cara Workman got Blessed Sacrament's last points of the quarter on a jumper from the lane for the 18-8 lead. Blessed Sacrament pounded the ball inside throughout the second half to win by 19. Mia Elmore scored 11 of her game high 14 points in the third quarter as Blessed Sacrament moved from a 22-10 lead to 34-16 with under 2:00 to play in the quarter. Elmore added two more points in the fourth quarter. Blessed Sacrament scored 16 points in both the 3rd and 4th quarters and outscored Cuba 32-23 in the last 12 minutes. Shay Reid also scored 14 points for the winners. Jenna Thompkins led Cuba with 11 points and was 5-6 from the free throw line. Cuba ended the year at 12-9. Blessed Sacrament takes a 23-2 record into Monday's quarterfinal game against Gifford.
Champaign St. Matthew vs. Media Southern
Media Southern, with a 7th and 8th grade enrollment of 62 and the second smallest of the quarterfinalists, took an 8-7 lead after one quarter. Then 5-11 eighth grader Mirium Rutzen took over inside as Media Southern pulled away. Rutzen hit a free throw at 3:41 to give Southern an 11-7 lead. She followed with a layup from the right side at 3:08 to push the margin to 13-7. Then she fired a great pass to Ashley coffey for a fast break layup at 1:28 and the 15-7 halftime lead. Rutzen scored 7 points in the first half. Coffey and Julianna Gilliam head had 4. Champaign St. Matthew went scoreless in the second quarter but not because it didn't get off shots at the basket. In eight of its last nine trips down the court in the second quarter St. Matthew had a shot bounce off the rim. The other time St. Matthew turned the ball over on a pass underneath the basket. In the second half of play Media Southern continued to outscore St. Matthews 23-12 for the half. Mirium Rutzen was the leading scorer for the game finishing with 17 points and 7-10 from the free throw line. Media Southern remains undefeated and advances to the semifinal round with a record of 23-0.






Normal Epiphany vs. Catlin
In a hard fought first half Normal Epiphany headed to the lockerroom with a 6 point lead. Catlin jumped out at the beginning of the 1st quarter to a quick 4 point lead, but Normal Epiphany found their stride to end the first quarter down 2 points. The Knights outscored Catlin 13-5 in the second quarter. Jacqui Reinhart had 6 points and Danielle Highland had 5 points at the half for Epiphany. Mallory Weber led the Catlin scorers with 5 first half points. In the second half Normal Epiphany started to pull away and never look back. #31 Kristen Cox of Catlin picked up her fourth foul and when she went to the bench the Knights pushed the ball inside. Jacqui Reinhart was the leading scorer for the game with 14 points going 4-5 from the line. Kerry Pelton add 10 points for the Knights as they advance to the semifinal round with a record of 24-1 to meet Media Southern.
Springfield St. Agnes vs. Greenfield
In the first quarter of play both teams came roaring out of the warm-up. St. Agnes outscored Greenfield 17-12 in the first quarter. In the second quarter the Aces of Springfield had an 11 point lead at one point, but the Lady Tigers of Greenfield came back to cut the lead to two points with a shot at the buzzer. Greenfield fought hard and several times in the second half were able to tie the ball game, but the Lady Tigers were unable to overtake the Aces of Springfield. Leah Pembrook of the Greenfield finished with 14 points and Demi VanDerWall was the leading scorer for the game from Springfield St. Agnes with 21 points. The Aces advances to the semifinals with a record of 21-4.
Gifford vs. Springfield Blessed Sacrament
Springfield Blessed Sacrement outscored Gifford 20-4 in the first quarter and never looked back. Mia Elmore, of the Bruins, led all scorers with 14 pts. Mary Sheehan was next for Blessed Sacrament with 11 points, three of which were three point baskets. The Bruins advance to semifinal play with a record of 24-2.
Media Southern vs. Normal Epiphany
In a defensive first half, the Normal Epiphany Knights held Media Southern to 6 points. Epiphany finished the first half with 19 points. Kerry Pelton and Danielle Highland led the Saints of Normal Epiphany with 6 points each. Mirium Rutzen was the leading scorer for Media Southern with 4 points.






In the second half, Media Southern went on a scoring run. Normal Epiphany answered in the 4th quarter and sealed the victory for the Knights. Kerry Pelton finished the night with 10 points for Normal Epiphany. Danielle Highland also contributed to the victory with 8 points. The leading scorers for the Raiders of Media Southern were Mirium Rutzen with 12 points and Ashli Burg with 8 points.
Springfield St. Agnes vs. Springfield Blessed Sacrament
Springfield Blessed Sacrament jumped out to an early lead over Springfield St. Agnes in the third meeting between the two teams. Blessed Sacrament lead by 6 at the end of the first quarter and by 15 at the end of the half. Kaeley Luhr lead the Bruins of Blessed Sacrament with 7 points at the half. The leading first half scorer for the Aces of St. Agnes was Becky Brenneisen with 6 points. In the second half, St. Agnes came out strong. Demi VanDerWal put up 7 points in the third quarter for the Aces of St. Agnes. The Bruins ability to beat the press sealed their victory. Cara Workman lead the Bruins of Blessed Sacrament with 12 points. The other Bruin in double digits was Kaeley Luhr with 11. Becky Brenneisen of St. Agnes lead all scorers with 19 points. Demi VanDerWal was the other high scorer for the Aces with 11.
Media Southern vs. Springfield St. Agnes
In a fast pace first half, Media Southern leads at halftime 31-28. In the first quarter Media Southern got off to a fast start outscoring Springfield St. Agnes 19-12. St. Agnes battled back in the second quarter to cut the lead to 3 at the half. Miriam Rutzen and Demi VanDerWal are battling it out for the lead scorer. Rutzen has 20 of Southern's first half points and VanDerWal as 18 of the Aces first ahlf points. In the second half of play both teams palyed hard. Media outscored St. Agnes 14-13 in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter Demi VanDerWal fould out of the game with 4 minutes to play and 23 points. She was the Aces leading scorer for the game. Kelsi Frank for St. Agnes hit two 3's with 3:52 to play to tie the ball game at 47 all. Miriam Rutzen received the ball under the basket and powered up a lay-up for the basket and one. After the Miriam's made free throw Southern never lost the lead again. Rutzen was the leading scorer of the game with 36 points. Southern finished the season with a record of 24-1. This was the Raiders second third place trophy in the school's 8th grade history.
Normal Epiphany vs. Springfield Blessed Sacrament
Both teams played a hard fought first half. Normal Epiphany led the first quarter 6-5 with Springfield Blessed Sacrament close behind. Both teams scored 9 points a piece in the second quarter. Normal Epiphany would gather a little momentum and take the lead, but Blessed Sacrament fought back to tie the ball game multiple times. Normal Epiphany leads at the half by one point. At the half, Ally Boll for Blessed Sacrement has 6 points and Jacqui Reinhart for Epiphany has 5 points. In another close half Blessed Sacrament was able to tie the game several times before Normal Epiphany kept a small lead. In the third quarter Epiphany was able to outscore Blessed Sacrament 12-7 and that was the tale of the game. Late in the fourth quarter Epiphany was ahead 30-29 with #13 Becca Macak at the line. Becca hit both of her free throws to put the Knights up 32-29. Blessed Sacrament brought the ball up the court and got a look at several three point baskets that hit the rim before Macak found herself at the line once again for Epiphany. Becca made both to seal the game and the championship. Danielle Highland, of Normal, was the leading scorer of the game with 10 points. Ally Boll was the leading scorer for Blessed Sacrament with 9 points. This is Normal Epiphany's first class 8A State Championship. The Knights finished the season with a record of 26-1. Congratulations to Coach Reinhart and the Knights of Normal Epiphany.
