Game Comments: Hope Bueker of St. Michael had the first points to begin the third quarterfinal game of the day and to put the Sharpshooters on the scoreboard; Lexington responded with their own basket just seconds later. A Micah McWhorter steal and layup put St. Michael ahead 6-2. Lexington's Annika Cappis was fouled on a successful layup but missed her free throw; Lexington trailed by 2 points and the quarter ended with St. Michael in the lead 6-4. Lexington took their first lead of the game on a Jayden Standish layup - this followed with Elena Steffa making an appearance at the free throw line making 1 of 2 free throws; Lexington had the lead 8-6. Jayden Standish scored another layup and this prompted a St. Michael timeout with 4:27 remaining in the first half. Hope Bueker brought the Sharpshooters into a tied game after 2 quick baskets and they went into halftime with a 17-15 lead over the Lexington Minutemen.
A Tia Hardt 3-pointer tied the game at 19 as the 3rd quarter was underway. 2 free throws by Bueker gave the Sharpshooters the lead 21-19 at the 3-minute mark. Jayden Standish's 2-pointer brought the Minutemen back to a tied game at 21 and Skyler Friedmansky's layup gave Lexington the lead to close out the 3rd quarter 23-21. Bueker's free throws tied the game 23-23; Lexington took possession and converted on 2 layups, one from Jayden Standish and another from Layken McGuire to put the Minutemen ahead 27-23. Micah McWhorter made 2 free throws to bring the Sharpshooters within 2 points with 1:52 remaining in the game. Lexie Niebrugge brought the Sigel crowd to their feet as she tied the game at 27 with 70 seconds left in the game. Lexington returned from timeout and quickly scored 4 points to put them ahead 31-27 with 14.6 seconds remaining - the Minutemen held their lead to finish out the game.
Congratulations to the Sharpshooters of Sigel St. Michael on an outstanding season - they finish their season with a record of 16 wins and 7 losses. The Lexington Minutemen will play in the 6:30 semifinal game tonight. |
