2005 7A State Tournament
Payson Seymour vs. Hopkins Park Lorenzo Smith
In a back and forth battle, the Braves of Payson Seymour defeated the Mustangs of Hopkins Park Lorenzo Smith. The Braves staged a tremendous second half scoring 27 points. Gage Murphy led the Braves with 18 points. Murphy scored 10 of his 18 points in the second half. Tevin Jordan (17 points) and Russ Board (8 points) were among the scoring leaders for the Braves. The Mustangs were lead by Kwamaine Robinson with 14 points and Brandon Brewer with 13 points. Payson Seymour advances to the Quarterfinals with a record of 23-2.
Chrisman Scottland vs. Effingham St. Anthony
Effingham St. Anthony staged an incredible come-back in the second half falling just short of a victory. The Bullpups scored 26 points in the second half. The Eagles of Chrisman-Scottland recovered in the fourth quarter scoring 14 points. The Eagles had three players score double digits. Zach Parson scored 19 points, Cody Owen scored 15 points, and Coy Thevenin scored 10 points for the Eagles. Leading scorer for Effingham St. Anthony was Taylor Worman with 15 points. Chrisman-Scottland advances to the Quarterfinals with a record of 21-2.
Madison vs. Toluca Fieldcrest West
Toluca Fieldcrest West played a balanced offensive and defensive game in their victory over the Spartans of Madison. The Knights of Fieldcrest West scored 29 points in the first half. Nathan Ropp led the Knights in their victory with 22 points. In his effort, Ropp made 4 3-point baskets. Matt Stephenson contributed 12 points to the Knights victory. The Spartans had three leading scorers. Kendall Nichols scored 8 points, Eric Mason scored 9 points, and Tiwan Cole scored 8 points for Madison. Toluca Fieldcrest West advances to the Quarterfinals with a record of 22-2.
Bloomington Holy Trinity vs. Springfield Christ the King
In an unbelievable comeback, the Cougars of Springfield Christ the King scored 30 points in the second half for a victory. Max Reavy of Christ the King scored the winning three point basket at the buzzer. Reavy ended the game with 34 points- 24 points coming from 3 point baskets. Bloomington Holy Trinity had two double digit scorers. Taylor Jewett scored 10 points and Adam McIntosh scored 16 points. The Cougars advance to the Quarterfinals with a record of 19-3.
Champaign Holy Cross vs. Findlay Okaw Valley
Findlay Okaw Valley ran a balanced attack in its victory over Champaign Holy Cross. The Timberwolves of Okaw Valley scored 25 points in the first half and 25 points in the second half. Three players from the Timberwolves were in double digits. Ryan Brandenburg scored 14 points, Ethan Foster and Aaron Fruchtl both scored 16 points. Nine of Foster's 16 points came from 3 pointers. The Crusaders of Holy Cross were led by Jason Herzog who scored 15 points. Neil Holding was the other leading scorer for the Crusaders with 10 points. The Timberwolves advance to the Quarterfinals with a record of 17-7.
Lincoln West Lincoln-Broadwell vs. Decatur Our Lady of Lourdes
West Lincoln-Broadwell put together a dominating offense in their victory over Decatur Our Lady of Lourdes. The Wolverines of West Lincoln-Broadwell scored 27 points in the first quarter and ended the first half with 44 points. The Wolverines added 22 points in the second half. Leading scorers for the Wolverines were Ben Brackey with 23 points and Cameron Turner with 17 points. The leading scorer for the Lancers of Our Lady of Lourdes was Brennan McElroy with 11 points. The Wolverines advance to the Quarterfinals with a record of 20-1.
Fisher vs. La Harpe
The Eagles of LaHarpe scored 27 points in the second half to edge out the Scotties of Fisher. The Scotties led the first half with 20 points. Contributing to the win for the Eagles were Michael Lafferty with 16 points and Mitchell Beals with 10 points. The Scotties had two double digit scorers. Guy Kirby led the Scotties with 13 points and Kameron Mason had 10 points. The Eagles of LaHarpe advance to the Quarterfinals with a record of 21-0. They are the only undefeated team advancing to the Quarterfinals.
Elmwood vs. Pontiac St. Mary's
The night cap game at Clinton was a thriller. A back-and-forth game that ended with Pontiac St. Mary's defeating Elmwood in overtime. The Saints of St. Mary's trailed at the half by 4 points. St. Mary's scored 21 points in the second half to tie the score at the end of regulation at 40. The Saints were led by Kyle Ledford with 16 points. Luke Gschwendtner contributed 13 points toward the win. Bailee Rickets led the Trojans of Elmwood with 15 points. Andrew Huber contributed 13 points for Elmwood. The Saints of St. Mary's advance to the Quarterfinals with a record of 21-2.
Payson Seymour vs. Chrisman Scottland
Chrisman Scottland withstood two Payson Seymour second half comebacks and used a pair of free throws by Zach Parson with :00.5 left to advance to the semifinals with a 29-27 victory. Chrisman Scottland scored eight straight points in the second quarter to go ahead 10-4 at 1:59 left in the second quarter. Chrisman Scottland increased the lead to 15-7 at 3:27 in the third quarter when Cody Owens hit a three-pointer from the right side and then hit a pair of free throws. Payson Seymour then went on a tear and scored the next 10 straight points to take a 17-16 lead at the end of the third quarter. Tevin Jordan led this comeback with three free throws, a steal layup and a driving layup at the buzzer. Chrisman Scottland exploded for the first 9 points of the fourth quarter to take a 25-17 lead. A three-point play by Coy Thevenin got the spurt started and sixth-grader Cody Owens finished it with a jumper in the lane at 4:35, another jumper in the lane at the 4:12 mark and a jumper in close in the paint at 3:43. Chrisman Scottland moved ahead 27-19 before Tevin Jordan took over again for Payson Seymour. Jordan scored on a layup and then his a trey at 1:23 to cut the deficit to 77-24. Luke Witte canned a trey from the left side at :15.8 to tie the game at 27-27. Chrisman Scottland took a timeout and ran a play. Two shots missed before Zach Parson got the rebound and was fouled, and he swished a pair of free throws to win the game. Tevin Jordan led Payson Seymour with 14 points. The Braves ended the year with a record of 23-3. Cody Owen led Chrisman Scottland with 13. The Eagles advance to Tuesday's semifinals with a 22-1 record.
Toluca Fieldcrest West vs. Springfield Christ the King
Toluca Fieldcrest West roared out of the gate in the first quarter to take an 11-3 lead and maintained that margin throughout the first half. The Knights got a layup from Zach Kirkton and a free throw on the play to build a 16-6 lead at the 5:41 mark in the second quarter. At 5:13, Zach Meyer also scored a layup and made a free throw on the second straight old fashioned three-point play for the Knights to make their lead 19-6. Nathan Ropp followed with a fast break layup for a 21-6 margin before Springfield Christ The King cut the deficit to 21-12 on a pair of driving layups from Jimmy Gvazdinskas. Fieldcrest West's Zach Kirkton ended the first half scoring with a driving layup off the Knights' spread offense and their 23-12 lead. Fieldcrest West pulled away in the second half, jumping to a 32-14 lead midway through the third quarter. Fieldcrest West ran its offense to perfection scoring at will on layups and short jumpers in the lane. Christ The King was forced to shoot three-pointers and was ice cold for most of the second half from three point land. A rebound layup by Nathan Ropp gave Fieldcrest West a 40-20 lead, and a pattern layup off the offense by Matt Stevenson pushed the margin to 42-20. The lead ultimately got to 25 points at 48-23 with a little more than a minute to go. Jake Smith led Christ The King with 8 points. Matt Stevenson topped Fieldcrest West in scoring with 16 points, on eight baskets, most of them in close on the pattern offense. Nathan Ropp added 11 for the winners. Christ The King bowed out of the tournament with a 19-4 record. Toluca Fieldcrest West advances to Tuesday's semifinal game against Chrisman Scottland with a 22-2 record.
Findlay Okaw Valley vs. Lincoln West Lincoln-Broadwell
Lincoln West Lincoln-Broadwell set the IESA all-time boys state basketball tournament record for made three-point field goals in its 73-31 quarterfinal round win over Findlay Okaw Valley. Lincoln-Broadwell made 11 three point field goals for the game, eclipsing the all-time record of 10 by Buffalo Tri-City in 1999(8A) and Rochester in 2004(8AA). Findlay Okaw Valley made 4 three-pointers in the game. The two-team total of 15 is believed to be the IESA all-time single game record for combined three-point field goals. Sixth-grader Jordan Nelson of Lincoln-Broadwell led his team with 26 points, including 6 three pointers. He became the eighth player in IESA boys basketball history to make 6 in a single game. (The all-time record of 8 treys in one game was set by Max Reavy of Springfield Christ The King in its 41-38 first round win over Bloomington Holy Trinity Saturday. Reavy scored 34 points against Holy Trinity.)Nelson, a feisty guard, scored 9 points in the first quarter, 8 in the second, 3 in the third and 6 in the fourth before leaving with nearly 3 minutes to play. Joining him in double figures for the winners were Hayden Cosby with 16 and Ben Brackney with 16. The Lincoln-Broadwell three-pointers were scored by Nelson at 6, Cosby at 2, Brackney at 2 and 1 by John Costello. Leading Okaw Valley in scoring was Ethan Foster with 16 points, including a pair of three-pointers. The 73 points was a Class 7A team single game points record, breaking the old mark of 63 by Hume Shiloh in 1986 and Springfield Christ The King in 2004. The margin of victory set the Class 7A record, breaking the old mark of 41 by Pekin Rankin in its 61-20 win over Cowden-Herrick in 1987. West Lincoln Lincoln-Broadwell advances to Tuesday's semifinal game with a record of 21-1. Findlay Oakw Valley ended its season at 17-8.













Lincoln West Lincoln-Broadwell roared out of the gate and went on to take a 23-4 lead after the first quarter and 35-14 at halftime. Jordan Nelson led Lincoln-Broadwell at halftime with 17 points. He scored 9 in the first quarter and 8 in the second and pumped in a trio of three-pointers in the process. Nelson was one of three players to score for the Wolverines in the first half. Teammate Hayden Cosby added 9 including one trey and Ben Brackney also added 9 with a trey of his own. The Wolverine swarming pressure defense forced Findlay Okaw Valley into numerous turnovers and cold shooting. In the second half, Lincoln-Broadwell kept on rolling. The Wolverines moved from their 35-14 halftime margin to 54-24 after three quarters and when reserve John Costello fired in a three-pointer from the right side to end the scoring for the game, it gave the winners their final 73-31 victory.
La Harpe vs. Pontiac St. Mary's
Pontiac St. Mary's came back from a 19-point halftime deficit to beat LaHarpe, 62-57, in overtime and advance to the semifinals Tuesday night against West Lincoln Lincoln-Broadwell. It was the second straight overtime win in this year's 7A State Tournament. St. Mary's beat Elmwood, 46-45, in the first round Saturday.






St. Mary's was led by the inside play of Luke Gschwendtner and Kyle Ledford, but it was the cat quick defensive pressure and full throttle playmaking and free throw shooting of point guard Ryan Crowley that proved to be the difference for the Saints. Crowley was the floor general for the second half comeback, making a three-pointer from the left side with :16.6 left in regulation to tie the game at 53-53 and send it into overtime. A layup by Luke Gschwendtener with 2:38 to go in overtime gave St. Mary's its first lead at 55-53. Then Crowley swished the first pair of six straight free throws to move the margin to 57-53. Justin Graves cut the LaHarpe deficit to 57-55 with a layup but Crowley came right back at the 1:22 mark in overtime with another pair of swished free throws for a 59-55 lead. Travis Wilson scored on a steal breakaway layup for LaHarpe at the :59.2 mark in overtime to narrow the LaHarpe deficit to 59-57. Back came Crowley for his third pair of swished charity tosses with :28.9 to go and a 61-57 St. Mary's lead. Luke Gschwendtner made one free throw at :12.6 in overtime to seal the win. St. Mary's takes a 22-2 record into its semifinal game against 21-1 Lincoln West Lincoln-Broadwell in Tuesday's nightcap. St. Mary's was outscored 36-17 in the first half, and turned the tables on LaHarpe in the final 12 minutes outscoring the Eagles 36-17. St. Mary's comeback started with a pair of old fashioned layup and free throw three-point plays to open the third quarter. A layup in the paint by LaHarpe's Nathan Trout was the Eagles' first points in the third quarter at 3:38 but it gave them a 38-24 lead. St. Mary's scored the next seven points to narrow the gap to 40-33 with 1:01 left in the third quarter. Luke Gschwendtner's layuop after a steal by Crowley made it 43-35 in favor of LaHarpe after the third quarter. St. Mary's scored the first six points of the fourth quarter, capped by a break neck speed layup by Crowley at 4:29 of the fourth quarter. Ryan Wilhite hit a layup to give LaHarpe a 48-43 lead and Michael Lafferty scored on a layup at 1:22 for a 50-45 LaHarpe lead. Kyle Masching hit a layup and made the free throw with it for a 3-point play and that cut St. Mary's deficit to 50-48 at the 1:15 mark. Michael Beals hit a jumper in the paint for LaHapre and a 52-48 margin at :57.4 Cade McDowell made 1 of 2 free throws for LaHapre at :37.7 for a 53-48 lead. Kyle Ledford of St. Mary's made a pair of free throws at :37.1 to cut the deficit to 53-50. With :33.7 and then again with :29.3 remaining in the game, LaHarpe's Michael Lafferty was fouled and missed the front end of the one and one both times. That set the stage for Ryan Crowley's three-pointer with :16.6 left to tie the game. LaHarpe had the ball for the last shot but could not score. Michael Lafferty led LaHarpe with 27 points, including three three-pointers, but only 6 of 15 from the foul line. Teammate Mitchell Beals added 14 and he had a pair of three-pointers. Luke Gschwendtner and Ryan Crowley each had 19 points for St. Mary's. Kyle Marching added 11. Crowley made three treys for the game.













LaHarpe exploded from a 14-13 lead after the first quarter to roll to a 36-17 halftime lead over Pontiac St. Mary's. Leading 21-17 late into the second quarter, the Eagles outscored St. Mary's 15-0 over the final 2:47 of the second quarter. Cade McDowell started the scoring spree with a three-pointer at 2:47. Michael Lafferty followed with a pair of free throws at 2:16 for a 26-17 margin. Then Michael Beals canned a three-pointer at :54.2 for a 31-17 lead and Michael Lafferty followed with a fast break layup off a steal at :48.7 and Lafferty ended the half with a three-pointer from the left side, giving LaHarpe its 19-point lead. LaHarpe outscored St. Mary's 22-4 in the second quarter.
Chrisman Scottland vs. Toluca Fieldcrest West
Although Chrisman-Scottland led 13-12 at the end of the first quarter and scored the first two points of the second quarter, the Knights of Toluca Fieldcrest West outscored the Eagles 10-4 in the final 3:48 of the second quarter to take a 22-19 lead at intermission. Nathan Ropp of Toluca hit two 3 point field goals in the 2nd quarter to help the Knights to the three point halftime lead. Fieldcrest West used a suffocating defense in the third quarter and outscored the Eagles 8-4 to take a 30-23 lead into the final stanza. Matt Stevenson, who finished the game with 13 points, scored the first bucket of the fourth quarter to extend the Fieldcrest West lead to nine. Two consecutive baskets by the Eagles, one by Coy Thevenin and one by Zach Parson cut the lead to 32-27 with three minutes to play. The two teams traded baskets to keep the lead at five and then Touluca made enough free throws down the stretch to win the game, 38-34. Thevenin led all scorers with 17 points while teammate Zach Parson chipped in with 10. Toluca will advance to Thursday night's championship game while Chrisman-Scottland will play for third place.
Lincoln West Lincoln-Broadwell vs. Pontiac St. Mary's
The Wolverines of West Lincoln-Broadwell continued their three point goal barrage Tuesday evening as they made 11 three point goals cruising to a 65-29 victory over the Saints of Pontiac St. Mary's. West Lincoln-Broadwell jumped out to a 17-9 lead at the end of the first quarter, extended the lead to 37-18 at halftime, outscored the Saints 21-9 in the third quarter for a 58-24 lead heading into the 4th quarter. Leading the way for the Wolverines was Hayden Cosby who had five 2 pt. field goals and five from beyond the arc for a game high 25 points. Ben Brackney had two 3pt. goals and six 2 pt. baskets for 18 points while 6th grader Jordan Nelson had four field goals, all from 3 point range for 12 points. Luke Gschwendtner, Kyle Ledford, and Kyle Masching each scored eight points for Pontiac St. Mary's who will now play for third place on Thursday against Chrisman-Scottland. West Lincoln-Broadwell will advance to the championship game on Thursday and will play Toluca Fieldcrest West.
Chrisman Scottland vs. Pontiac St. Mary's
In a well-played first half, the Eagles of Chrisman-Scottland controlled the tempo of the game to gain a 21-16 halftime lead over the Saints of Pontiac St. Mary's. Chrisman jumped out to an 8-4 lead at the first quarter only to see St. Mary's tie the game at eight. The Eagles then scored the final two buckets of the first quarter to take a 12-8 lead into the second quarter. St. Mary's scored the first six points of the second quarter to take a 14-12 lead but then Zach Parson of Chrisman made a conventional three point play at the 3:32 mark to give the Eagles a 15-14 lead. Chrisman outscored the the Saints 6-2 the rest of the quarter for their halftime lead. Chrisman seemed to be in control of the game and well on their way to the 3rd place championship as they scored the first eight points of the third quarter to take a commanding 29-16 lead. The Eagles stretched their lead at one point to 17 and then settled for a lead at the end of the 3rd quarter, 37-24. However, St. Mary's would not quit and they rallied behind the three point shooting of Luke Gschwendtner. His three point goal with 1:53 left in the game cut the lead to eight, 43-35. Two free throws for Chrisman put the Eagles back up by 10 but another three point goal by Gschwendtner at the 1:12 mark cut the lead to seven. The Eagles countered with one free throw only to have Gschwendtner make a two point goal, to make the score 46-40 with :54.9 seconds remaining. One more free throw by Chrisman extended the lead to seven but another three point goal by St. Mary's, this one by Kyle Masching, made the score 47-43 with 42 seconds left in the game. Chrisman then missed five straight free throws before they finally made one of two to go up five, 48-43. Two free throws by Nic Hart with 13.6 seconds remaining pulled the Saints within three, 48-45. Two free thows by Craig Denton from Chrisman with 12.4 seconds remaining helped to seal the victory as St. Mary's made a two point goal as time expired for a 50-47 victory for Chrisman. Gschwendtner led all scorers with 23 points while Masching and Kyle Ledford each scored eight points. Zach Parsons led the way for Chrisman-Scottland with 17 points while Coy Thevenin and Cody Owens each chipped with 11 points.
Toluca Fieldcrest West vs. Lincoln West Lincoln-Broadwell
West Lincoln-Broadwell captured its first-ever 7A IESA state basketball championship with a 45-39 victory over the Knights of Toluca Fieldcrest West. The Wolverines set an IESA state tournament record with 34 three point field goals in the four game finals.













After a relatively close first quarter which saw the lead change several times, West Lincoln-Broadwell made two three point field goals near the end of the quarter to lead after one stanza, 15-11. A strong defensive effort by West Lincoln-Broadwell held Fieldcrest to just five points in the second quarter and allowed the Wolverines to take a 26-16 lead into the locker room at halftime. Fieldcrest turned up the intensity in the third quarter and outscored West Lincoln-Broadwell 16-9 to trail at the end of the third quarter 34-32. Nathan Ropp had two, three-point goals and a two point goal while Zach Kirkton contributed 6 points in the quarter. The Wolverines points were scored by Ben Brackney with a three point goal and two free throws and Hayden Cosby who had four points. Ropp scored on a layup for the first points of the 4th quarter to tie the game at 34 all. Jordan Nelson, a sixth grader for West Lincoln-Broadwell then scored the first two points of the fourth quarter for WLB to give the lead back to WLB, 36-34. Fieldcrest countered with a three point goal by Ropp to take a 37-36 lead. Two free throws by WLB''s Ben Brackney put the Wolverines up 38-37. Another layup basket by Ropp quickly gave the lead back to Fieldcrest, 39-38. However, the sixth grade sensation Nelson made consecutive three point goals, the last one coming with 1:33 remaining in the game to give WLB a 44-39 lead which they never relinquished. Nelson made one of two free throws with 33 seconds remaining to give the Wolverines the 45-39 victory over Fieldcrest.













A crowd estimated at 2200 watched the championship game at Clinton High School. Nelson led all scorers with 19 points, nine coming in the decisive 4th quarter. Brackney added 16, Cosby had 8 points and Cameron Turner chipped in with two. Fieldcrest West was led by Ropp with 15 points, Kirkton added 11, Taylor Baxter had five points and Zach Meyer and Matt Stevenson had four points each.













WLB set numerous records during the tournament. The 34 three point goals by WLB broke the All-Time Record for most three point goals in the tournament which was previously set by Buffalo Tri-City in 1999 at the 8A tournament as well as smashing the Class 7A record which was 15 set by Monmouth ICS in 2003. WLB tied the All-Time record for most three point goals in a championship game with seven and tied the class 7A game record for three point goals with the same seven. In addition, the seven threes set the class 7A championship game record. The 249 points scored by WLB (66,73,65,45)set the record for most points scored in the Class 7A tournament. The 73 points in the second game set the single game scoring record which was 63.
