Game Comments: The first quarterfinal match-up saw the Meteors of Mokena take on the Rockets of Rochester. State tournament jitters were evident from the start for both teams as they both struggled to get their offenses in play in the first quarter. Mokena’s only points in the first quarter came from #45 Kathryn Kraft and Rochester’s first basket of the half was in the 2nd quarter with a nice post move by #43 Emma Jiroutek.
First basket of the 2nd half #22 Regan LaConte stole the ball and drove for an easy lay-up giving Mokena a 9-7 lead. Mokena stepped up their ball pressure in the half and had several steals for easy lay-ups. Rochester’s post kept the Rockets in the game with their quick rebounds on defense and good looks at the basket on offense.
#45 Kathryn Kraft started the 4th quarter with a nice post play basket to cut Rochester’s lead to one point. With two minutes to play in the game Rochester had a three point lead and moved the ball around the horn to run down the clock. #45 Lindsey Spaetti drained four free throws to give the Rockets a little cushion. #21 Kaylen Evans drove the lane with 45 seconds to cut the lead to five, but the Rockets went 6-7 from the free throw line in the final minutes of the game.
Congratulations to Mokena on a great season. Rochester will play in the 5:00 semi-final game tonight.
