Game Comments: The Calumet City Schrum Spartans claimed the championship trophy in class 3A by defeating the Washington MS Panthers 48-37 in front of a packed house at Wenona Fieldcrest Middle School. Both teams finished the season with identical 24-1 records. Schrum held a slim 9-8 lead after the first quarter but they raced to an 21-14 lead at halftime. Washington crept back into the game by outscoring the Spartans 13-10 in the third quarter and the score was 31-27 heading into the 4th quarter. Guerby Minintre scored on a little floater down the lane to open the 4th quarter for Schrum and that extended their lead to 33-27. Austin Reel made both ends of a one and one for the Panthers to make the score 33-29. Then with 3:55 left in the game Alec Peters, who led all scorers with 21 points, dropped in a 3 pt. bomb to make the score 33-32. On Schrum's next possession they missed a shot and Reel headed to the line when he was fouled grabbing the rebound. He made the front end of the one and one and the game was tied at 33. Wiilliam Wilson then made a layup for Schrum to make the score 35-33. Washington missed their next shot and Ministre made a layup and was fouled completing the threepoint play to extend the lead to 38-33. DJ Deere then made both ends of a one and one for Schrum which extended the Spartans' lead to 40-33. Schrum got the ball back and Derre was immediately fouled sending him to the line again. He missed the front end but Ministre grabbed the rebound and put it back in for a 42-33 lead with 1:28 remaining and ended the Panthers hopes for an undefeated season.
