Game Comments: The Sages of Monticello Middle School advanced to the semifinals with a thrilling 33-30 victory over the Lincoln JHS Trojans. Lincoln led 11-8 after one period and 19-15 at halftime but Monticello turned up the defensive pressure in the third period by allowing only two field goals while scoring 12 points of their own to take the lead 27-23. Lincoln got the game tied at 27 but Bryan Phipps made a layup and was fouled and made the free throw to give the Sages a 30-27 with 3:31 left in the game. That lead lasted about a minute as Ethan Michael drained a long three point shot to tie the game at 30 all. Parker Trice of Monticello was then fouled attempting a shot and he made one of two from the free throw line to give the Sages a 1 point lead at 31-30 with 2:07 left. Monticello got the ball back and Phipps was fouled with 1:46 to go. He made one of two and Monticello led 32-30. Trice missed a layup with 1:20 on the clock and then both teams traded missed shots and turnovers until the :14 mark when Ryan Binder of Monticello was fouled and went to the line for a one and bonus. Binder missed the front end but Trice came up with a huge rebound and passed the ball to Isaac Bales who was immediately fouled. With :07 showing and after a Lincoln timeout, Bales stepped up to the line and made the first of two free throws to give Monticello a 33-30 lead. Bales missed the second toss and Lincoln grabbed the rebound, pushed the ball down the court to an open Will Podbelsek in the right corner. A Sage player flew at Podbelsek and forced him to slightly alter his shot. His three point attempt with one second remaining was right on line but just a bit short and the Sages escaped with a 33-30 victory.
