Game Comments: This matchup is a repeat of last year's 7th grade class 3A semifinal game between the same two teams which was won by Washington 54-51. Here is a synopsis of that game.
Washington led 23-18 at half but the Spartans scored the first 6 points of the third quarter to take a brief 24-23 lead. Troy Adams made two free throws to give the lead back to Washington as the Panthers went on to score four more consecutive points to lead once again by five, 29-24. However, Madison came back again and led after three periods, 32-31. The Spartans scored the first basket of the 4th quarter to extend their lead to 34-31 and after Austin Reel of Washington missed two free throws, Sterling Harrell of Madison rebounded his own missed shot, put it back in and got fouled. Harrell missed the free throw and Madison had a 36-31 lead with 4:40 remaining. Reel redeemed his earlier misses with a conventional three point play after being fouled on his layup to cut the lead to 36-34 with 4:09 left. Marcus Williams then duplicated the layup and conventional three point play for Madison and the Spartans once again had a five point lead at 39-34. with 2:05 remaining, Reel once again went to the line for a one and bonus where he calmly sank both to cut the lead to three, 39-36. Harrell then missed the front end of a one and bonus with 1:26 left. Reel once again came up huge for the Panthers as he made a layup and was fouled in the act of shooting. He missed the free throw and the Panthers were down 39-38 with 1:12 left. Harrell extended the Spartans lead to 3 with a layup of his own and Madison led 41-38 with one minute to go. Alec Peters then made a layup of his own to cut Spartans lead back to one at 41-40. After a Madison miss, a great pass by Peters led to a fast break layup for Grant Johnson which gave the Panthers their first lead of the 4th quarter, 42-41 with 30 seconds left in the game. Washington fouled Harrell who went to the line for a one and one. He again missed the front end and Madison immediately fouled after the Washington rebound. Brad Kuchenbecker went to the line with :23 showing on the clock for two shots but missed them both. Madison worked the ball down the court but terrific defense forced Harrell to take an off balance 10 footer. The shot did not drop and the Washington Panthers escaped with a thrilling 42-41 victory over Madison. They will now face Teutopolis in the first semifinal game.
