Game Comments: The championship game of the 7th grade 3A finals was played in front of a near capacity crowd at Clinton High School. Washington Middle School jumped out to an early first quarter lead 10-5 with Alec Peters scoring 6 of the team's first 10 points. The Panthers held their largest lead of the quarter at 8-2 with 2:27 remaining but the Redbirds outscored the Panthers 3-2 the rest of the way to be down five at the end of the first stanza. Pleasant Plains closed the gap to three early in the second quarter, 12-9, but Derek Flanagan pushed the lead back to five with a bucket at the 3:25 mark. The Redbirds' terrific guard, Anthony Venturini, then made a bucket to cut the lead to three and when Logan Larson made a nifty move to the basket and scored on a layup, Plains had pulled within one at, 14-13. A Venturini steal led to a missed attempt, but a turnover by Washington gave the ball back to the Redbirds. Larson gave the Redbirds their first lead of the game, 15-14, with 1:32 left in the half with a nice basket. Flanagan answered that basket with one of his own after rebounding a missed shot by a teammate to give the Panthers their 16-15 halftime lead. Plains held Washington to just two points in the third quarter while they scored five to erase the one point halftime deficit and turn it into a two point lead heading into the 4th quarter. Plains led 23-22 when Logan Larson was fouled on a shot attempt. Larson calmly sank both free throws to give Plains its largest lead of the game at 25-22. Turnovers by each team after the free throws gave the ball back to Washington. Troy Adams was fouled with 3:12 remaining and his two free throws brought the Panthers to within one, 25-24. Both teams then missed several of their next attempts and the next bucket wasn't scored until Alec Peters hit a 10 ft. shot from the left baseline to give the Panthers the lead, 26-25 with 1:15 to go. On the Redbirds' ensuing possesion, Venturini missed a floater going down the lane. There was a scramble for the rebound and Steven Rush came up with the loose ball and was fouled. Rush missed the front end of the one and bonus and Washington secured the rebound. The Panthers called a timeout with :37.6 ticks left on the clock. On the mid-court throw in, Pleasant Plains fouled which put the ball back at almost the same throw-in spot. On the second throw-in, Venturini stole the inbounds pass and made a terrifc assist to Justin Yakel for a lay-up and a 27-26 Redbirds lead. As Washington worked the ball up the court for a game winning shot, Michael Cameron of the Redbirds stole the ball with only 11 seconds remaining. He was immediately fouled and went to the line for a one and bonus. Cameron missed the front end, Washington grabbed the rebound and pushed it up the court where they found Bryce Wright wide open on the left wing. Wright's game winning three point attempt came with 3 seconds left and when it just barely missed, Pleasant Plains had won a very close, well-played championship game, 27-26.
