Game Comments: Washington Middle School had just enough gas left in the tank Saturday night to hang on to a 54-51 victory over Madison in the semifinals of the 3A tournament. A terrific game that literally came down to the last shot saw the lead change hands several times in the 4th quarter before Alec Peters drained a 3 point goal from the top of the key with 17 seconds remaining to give the Panthers a 54-51 lead. Peters, who scored a game high 30 points, was stellar throughout the night as was Sterling Harrell for Madison. The 5'5" forward led the Spartans with 24 points, many of those coming on difficult put backs after Madison misses. At the start of the 4th quarter and with Washington holding a slim 40-39 advantage, Marcus Williams made two consecutive layups to put Madison ahead 43-40. Peters calmly knocked down two free throws to pull Washington within one at 43-42. After a Madison miss, Peters stroked home a three point bomb with 4:23 remaining to give Washington the lead at 45-43. Madison quickly answered that with a 2 pt. bucket to tie the game at 45. Troy Adams scored on a layup at the 3:40 mark to give the lead back to Washington, 47-45. Madison brought the ball down the court and missed their attempt. Washington got the rebound and Bryce Wright's attempt from the left side was off mark but Adams was there for the easy rebound basket and Washington led, 49-45. Jimmy Jones for Madison then got an offensive rebound and was fouled on his attempt. Jones made both of his charity throws and pulled Madison to within two, 49-47. Washington then made a bad pass which was stolen by Madison and Jones scored on a layup to knot the game at 49 with 1:20 left in the contest. On the Panthers'next possession, Adams made a terrific pass to a wide open Peters under the basket to give Washington a 51-49 lead with :55 remaining. Harrell then got a great rebound and put it back in for the Spartans to once again tie the game at 51 with 50 seconds left. Washington worked the ball down the court and with :28.9 showing on the clock called a time-out. They called Peters' number once more and the 5'10" 7th grader knocked home the biggest basket of the game to give Washington the lead 54-51 with just 17 seconds remaining. Madison called a timeout at the :14 mark to set up their last play. On the inbounds play, Madison immediately attempted a three point shot, missed that shot, grabbed the rebound, missed that shot, and finally, Marcus Williams came away with the ball inside the lane for Madison. He was fouled in the act of shooting with only :1.4 seconds remaining and his team down three. Williams missed both free throws. Washington will now play Pleasant Plains for the Class 3A title Thursday night while Madison will take on Chillicothe for 3rd place honors.
