Game Comments: The Falcons of Springfield Franklin captured the first ever 7th grade Class 4A IESA state title Thursday night by defeating the Ridgerunners of Danville North Ridge, 48-44, played at Stanford Olympia. The Falcons were led in scoring by Ridge Ackerman and Willie Wiley with 15 and 14 points respectively, while Dennis Hightower of North Ridge led all scorers with 25 points in a losing effort. Franklin jumped to an early 19-10 lead after one quarter and extended the lead to 11 points at halftime, 27-16. North Ridge came out of the locker room a different team and with Hightower pouring in 11 points in the third quarter, the Ridgerunners only trailed by 4 points, 37-34 heading into the final stanza. North Ridge managed to tie the score at 41-41 behind two three pointers from Hightower and a two point basket from Jaron Cunningham. With 1:45 remaining and the scored tied, Franklin's Payton Fleming hit a 15 ft. jumper to give the Falcons a two point lead. North Ridge brought the ball down the court but at the 1:19 mark, lost the ball out of bounds. Franklin worked the ball around the perimeter and, after a loose ball that was finally grabbed by Franklin, Ridge Ackerman made a layup with :55 seconds remaining after a shot by a teammate was blocked by North Ridge. With the Falcons ahead 45-41, Hightower missed a basket and the rebound was controlled by the Falcons. Willie Wiley then made a layup that extended the Falcons lead to 47-41 with 23 seconds remaining in the game. However, North Ridge did not give up as Hightower sank his third three pointer of the quarter to cut the deficit to 47-44 with :12 to play. After a time-out and a couple of fouls by North Ridge to finally get the Falcons to the free throw line, Fleming was fouled with 7.1 seconds remaining. He calmly sank the first one to make it 48-44. He missed the second but the 4 point lead was enough and when Franklin stole the pass from North Ridge, coach Dave Brewer and his Falcons were State Champions.
