One Record Set Friday in Class A State Track & Field Meet

EAST PEORIA - Johanna Haywood of Altamont set the only record of the day when she won the eighth grade girls long jump with a leap of 17-1 Friday during the IESA Class A State Final Track and Field Meet Friday at the EastSide Centre.

Haywood won the event by 10 inches over runner-up Rochelle Jones of Decatur Robertson. Haywood also qualified for the 100-meter dash finals.

Following are the highlights of competition Friday:

Seventh Grade Girls

Jessica Awe of Mt. Pulaski won the long jump with a leap of 15-8.5 and qualified for the 100-meter dash finals, winning her semifinal heat by nearly 10 meters. She also brings the top-seeded time into Saturday's 200-meter dash event. A first place in each event is worth 10 team points.

Other state champions were Hanna Winter of Arlington Hts. Our Lady of the Wayside in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:28.70; Alyssa Platz of Sigel St. Michael's in the shot put at 30-11.75; Madeline Jordan of Lake Zurich St. Francis deSale in the 400-meter dash in 1:03.77; Sydney Timmons of Waverly in the discus at 88-08; and Janie Skulborstad of Champaign Holy Cross in the high jump at 5-0.

Seventh Grade Boys

State Champions were Tyler Young of Girard in the long jump at 17-11.75; Kyle Sims of Mason City Illini Central in the 1600-meter run at 5:01.68; Tyler Sparks of Sumner Red Hill in the 400-meter dash at a sizzling time of :56.31; and Colten Franklin of Kewanee Wethersfield in the pole vault at 8-9.

Eighth Grade Girls

Kaley Ummel of Lexington stormed to a 21-second win in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:18.13.

In the 400-meter dash, Katelyn Hammarlund of Arlington Hts. Our Lady of the Wayside won in 1:01.03 while last year's seventh grade champion Kaitlin Phillips of Hinckley-Big Rock took third in 1:01.30.

Olivia Herzog of Findlay Okaw Valley won the shot put with a toss of 37-4 and finished third in the discus at 101-2. Katy Spesard of Paris Crestwood won the discus with a toss of 106-1.

Cassy Groom of Waverly took the high jump at 5-1.

Eighth Grade Boys

There were two sizzling races. In the 400-meter dash Jeremy Lindsey of Joliet Laraway won with a time of :53.36 while Kayden Guymon of Carthage took second in :53.51. In the 1600-meter run Greg Leifel won the race by four-thousandths of a second. Leifel was timed in 4:53.60 and runner-up Walker Herzog was second in 4:53.64. Third place finisher Zach Quinn of Heyworth posted a time of 4:54.99.

Other state champions were Mitchell Mammoser of Newton St. Thomas in the pole vault at 10-10 and Terry Yelm of Kewanee Wethersfield in the long jump with a leap of 19-8.
