New IESA Sportsmanship Manual Now Online

The first Sportsmanship Manual designed for use in Illinois junior high/middle school programs has been published by the Illinois Elementary School Association (IESA) and is available online.

IESA's vision for sportsmanship is built on expectations that the entire school community will teach and promote the values of good sportsmanship.

Students, coaches, administrators, board members, and spectators are expected to demonstrate the highest level of sportsmanship and respect for others.

Not only is good sportsmanship necessary for a successful interscholastic activity, it is a character quality that contributes to successful life endeavors. IESA member schools have a mission to provide a respectful and caring environment for today's youth that fosters the development of tomorrow's leaders. The IESA strives to provide leadership and resources that complement the mission of the member schools.

The manual was developed to help member schools establish and promote a year round sportsmanship program. Included are sections involving:

  1. A School Year Timetable for Sportsmanship
  2. IESA Bylaws that Apply to Sportsmanship
  3. Sample Codes of Conduct (for all who are involved in the interscholastic program at a member school)
  4. Expectations of Behavior
  5. Promotional Strategies
  6. Sample Public Address Announcements for use at the event sites on the day of competition
  7. Sample Public Service Spot Announcements (PSA's) for use in the schools on a general basis and to be supplied to the local media
  8. Crowd Control strategies
