New Pitching Inning Limitations for 2000-2001

-- by-law numbers are subject to change

Pitching Exceptions

4.0141 As soon as a pitcher delivers one pitch, the pitcher has pitched one inning. [6]

4.0142 A pitcher withdrawn from the mound can not return to pitch in the same game. When a pinch-hitter is used the first time for the pitcher, the pitcher may re-enter to start pitching the next inning. If a pinch-hitter is used for the pitcher a second time, the pitcher must be removed from the mound and game. [3-1-2]

Regular Season

4.0143 In regular season play, a pitcher shall not be allowed to pitch in more than seven innings in one day, nor in more than 16 innings in any one calendar week. [6-6]

4.0144 In regular season play, a pitcher who has pitched four or more innings can never pitch on two consecutive days unless the pitcher is completing a suspended game in which the pitcher has pitched. [6-6]

State Tournament Series

4.0145 In state tournament series play, a pitcher shall not be allowed to pitch in more than seven innings in one day, nor in more than 16 innings in any one calendar week. This applies to all state tournament series play, with the exceptions noted in 4.0147 - 4.0149. [6-6]

4.0146 In state tournament series play, a pitcher who has pitched five or more innings can never pitch in two consecutive games unless the pitcher is completing a suspended game in which the pitcher has pitched. [6-6]

4.0147 A pitcher in the state tournament series is allowed to pitch nine innings in a tie game provided there are sufficient innings of weekly eligibility left. [6-6]

4.0148 A pitcher in the state tournament series is limited to any combination of 10 innings if the team plays two games in one day. [6-6]

4.0149 Entering the state final tournament, all pitchers will have 16 innings of weekly eligibility. [6-6]

COMMENTS

4.0141 No change

4.0142 No change

4.0143 No change

4.0144 No change

4.0145 No change

4.0146 This recommendation effects state tournament play only and differs from the regular season restriction in By-Law 4.0144. It allows up to five innings to be pitched and specifies "consecutive games" not "consecutive days."

4.0147 No change

4.0148 Removes the restriction that a pitcher can not pitch in the second game if he has pitched in four or more innings in the first game. This will allow the pitcher up to 10 innings regardless of how they are used during the two games.

4.0149 By allowing all pitchers to have a full 16 innings of weekly eligibility, each team will begin with a full complement of pitching innings. This ensures that teams who might have to play their sectional contest the same week as the state final tournament (i.e., rainout) won't be penalized.

NOTE: While only a few by-laws are fundamentally changed, most have been reorganized (i.e., re-numbering of by-laws, re-worded, etc.).
