Match Comments: The championship match saw the honey ears of Mt. Pulaski take on the Wildcats of Lovejoy. Both teams had a game plane and we're able to run their offense seeing key kills from multiple players. In the first set, Lovejoy #4 Kendra Reed and #12 mikayala Jeffries were keynote the attack getting points all over the court. #6 Abigail Fitzpatrick saw some great kills down the line in the first set, but Lovejoy's serving was too much for the Honeybears in the set.
Mt. Pulaski came back in the second set firing on all cylinders.#23 Skylar Hayes was huge at the net. She and #20 Ainsley Chandler serving started the set out with a 6-0 lead before turning it over to Lovejoy. Lovejoy saw some good net play from Kendra Reed, but the Honeybears were too hot to stop in the second set.
The final set of the match, the Honeybears once again went to Skylar Hayes on the outside to take the early lead at 7-1. Ainsley Chandler continued her serving dominance in the final set for Mt. Pulaski. She ended the match with 4 aces and 15 service points. Lovejoy struggled to get into a rhythm on their usually strong serving and Mt. Pulaski took advantage. It appeared that the Lovejoy players thought the match was over at 15 when their fans started cheering to keep them alive. #11 Gracen Gaskins had a service run at the end of the set to keep Lovejoy alive, but the Honeybears capitalized on a couple bad passes and won the match.
Congratulations to both teams on a great match and wonderful season. This is Mt. Pulaski's first 7-1A State Championship title.
