Match Comments: The 8-2A championship match pitted the Eagles of Liberty against the Lancers of Decatur Our Lady of Lourdes (OLOL). Both teams came out of the locker room fired up and ready to play. The Lancers were led at the net by #5 Kite Oladipupo and #28 Casey Cooper. The Eagles were led by #30 Madelyn Hyer. Madleyn had a excellent all around match. Her ferocious net play, great passing, and tenacious serving gave the Lancers trouble all night. #11 Michaela Leapley also had a great night at the net for the Eagles.
Liberty took a lead in the first set of the match, when Madelyn stepped up to serve, but the Lancers never gave up. OLOL tied the match at 22 and then took the lead on the next serve, but the teams then traded service errors until Michaela Leapley stepped up and fired off 2 aces for set. The second set saw these two teams battle it out to the finish. Trading kills early on, the Lancers had the lead 16-13 when Madelyn hyer once again took over the serve for the Eagles. She served 3 straight aces and the Lancers took a quick timeout to stop her momentum, but it didn’t work. Madelyn came out of the time out and fired off two more aces and 2 more additional services points to give Liberty a 20-16 lead. Once again the Lancers fought back and tied the match at 23 a piece. After a big rally by Liberty to save a sure point, OLOL turned the ball over and Katie Cook calmly stepped up for Liberty to serve the final point. Congratulations to the Eagles of Liberty on their first 8-2A State Championship.
