2005 8A State Tournament
Roseville vs. Pawnee
Both teams took a few minutes to get into the swing of the first match of the State Tournament. For the Pawnee Lady Indians #13 Megan Fleigle served four straight points with 2 aces.






Pawnee jumped out to a quick lead in the second game with a 0-4 start, but the Eagles were too much for the Lady Indians. In game 2 Katy Kirby (#37) of Roseville served 5 straight service points which included 2 aces to put the Eagles up 9-4. The Lady Indians never seemed to get their feet under them as the Eagles went on to win 15-7. Pawnee Lady Indians finished their season with a 16-6 record. Roseville Eagles advance to the quarterfinals with a record of 19-6.
Mt. Pulaski vs. Oakland Lake Crest
The Mt. Pulaski Honeybears came out strong in the first game 10-0, before the Titans called a timeout. Oakland Lake Crest just couldn't seem to pull it together and the Honeybears won 15-3.






The Titans regrouped in the second game. #23 Melanie Clapp had 6 kills while #30 Ashley Stark had 5 kills for the Titans. The game rallied back and forth with Oakland securing the win 16-14.






In final game the Mt. Pulaski Honeybears dominated once again. #5 Kelsey Ogelsby served 11 straight points to secure the Honeybears a place in the quarterfinals with a 15-2 win. Oakland Lake Crest finished their season with a 22-1 record. The Honeybears 20-5 will play the Roseville Eagles in the quarterfinals on Monday, March 21st at 3:30.
Stewardson-Strasburg vs. Mazon-Verona-Kinsman
This was exciting match-up with two great teams. The Comets started out with #27 Alex Shadwell serving five straight points. The Mavericks of Mazon-Verona Kinsman fought back. Down 14-8 they came back with level heads and great rallies to finish out strong with a 14-16 victory. #25 Lauren Sereno had 3 aces in the first game and #15 Samantha Turner had two aces and two kills for the Mavericks.






Stewardson-Strasburg down 0-4 in the second game had #26 Ashley Antrim serve six straight points to rally back. The Comets were down 8-12 and turned the game around with a 15-12 victory.






In the third game #38 Kelsey Finch and #15 Samantha Turner had a great block to start. The Mavericks took the early lead 0-4, but the Comets had great service play and came back for a 15-4 victory. The Mazon-Verona-Kinsman Mavericks ended their season 11-10 while the Stewardson-Strasburg Comets improve to 15-9 and advance to the quarterfinals on Monday.






Effingham St. Anthony vs. Bunker Hill Meissner
This was a rally match with both teams playing for the win. In the first game Effingham St. Anthony came out strong. #14 Alli Murphy had 4 aces and 1 kill and #40 Heather Esker has 2 aces. The Bullpups won the game 15-2.






The second game was a back and forth rally, the score tied 7 different times with the Patriots coming out on top 12-15.






Both teams came out hard in the third game, Effingham St. Anthony taking an early 3-0 lead. Bunker Hill Meissner came back tying the score 4-4. #12 Katrina Hanner had 2 aces. The Patriots did not give up the lead again, winning 10-15. The Effingham St. Anthony Bullpups end their season with a 13-12 record. The Bunker Hill Meissner Patriots 11-7 advance to the quarterfinals playing the Stewardson-Strasburg Comets in Monday's 4:45 match-up.
Cissna Park vs. Peoria Limestone Walters
Peoria Limestone Walters Rockets dominated this match. The first game 15-2, #6 Nicole Bill had 5 straight points and 5 kills, while #18 Courtney Langen had 2 aces and 2 kills.






The second game the Rockets won 15-1. #20 Jessica Jones had 3 kills and Nicole Bill (#6) had 6 straight points and 3 kills to help carry her team to victory. The Peoria Limestone Walters Rockets remain undefeated with a record of 25-0 and advance to the quaterfinals on Monday. The Cissna Park Wildcats finish their season with a record of 18-7.






Greenfield vs. Champaign St. Matthew
This match up was clearly controlled by the Greenfield Tigers. In the first game #15 Leah Pembrook opened up with six straight service points. #14 Libby Bedwell for the Champaign St. Matthew Lady Raiders had 3 aces, but it was not enough to hold off the 6 straight points by #30 Paige Vinyard of the Greenfield Tigers to win the first game 15-7.






The second game started with a 6-0 lead again by the Tigers. Greenfield kept up the pace to take a 12-2 commanding lead. The Tigers rallied to make the score 12-6, but could not hold off the dominating front line of the Tigers.






The Champaign St. Matthew Lady Raiders finish their season 13-11. The Greenfield Tigers continue their winning streak to 24-2. They will play Monday night at 6:00pm against the Rockets of Peoria Limestone Walters.
Lincoln Carroll Catholic vs. Bloomington Holy Trinity
What an exciting match between two evenly matched teams. It was hard to get the ball down on either team. The Lincoln Carroll Catholic Crusaders fought back the entire first game to tie it up at 13-13. #11 Samantha Lowman and #20 Kayla Jenkins both had 5 kills each in the first game, but it just wasn't enough to get the win. Bloomington Holy Trinity pulled it out 17-15.






The second game's score does not accurately reflect the play of the game. The Crusaders were down 0-9 with many rallies back and forth. The Saints held onto their lead winning 15-9.






Bloomington Holy Trinity Saints better their record to 23-1 and will play the winner of the LaHarpe - Metamora game on Monday. The Crusaders finish their season with a record of 17-8.






La Harpe vs. Metamora St. Mary's
The final match-up of the night turned out to be quite a match.






The first game was clearly dominated by the Lady Falcons. Metamora took the lead at 5-4 and never looked back. They took the first game 15-5.






The second game the LaHarpe Eagles regrouped and came out strong with a 4-0 lead. #10 Erica Eddington served 6 straight and had 4 aces to lead the Eagles from an 8-8 tie to a 14-8 lead. The LaHarpe Eagles came out on top 15-9.






The third game turned into quite a rally match. #8 Kourtni Reed for the Eagles served 4 straight. The LaHarpe Eagles won the game 15-8. #1 Morgan Pollock had 12 kills in the match.






Metamora St. Mary's Lady Falcons finished the season with a 18-5 record, while the LaHarpe Eagles 23-2 will play Bloomington Holy Trinity in Monday's night final quarterfinal game at 7:15pm
Roseville vs. Mt. Pulaski
In game 1 of the first quarterfinal match-up Roseville was the first to get on the board. Mt. Pulaski tied up the sore at 4-4 and pulled into the lead on an Ace from #24 Ellen Volle. Both teams traded sideouts and then #25, Meghan Stoll, for Mt. Pulaski scored points 8-12 to put the Honeybears in a comanding lead. Roseville cut the lead to four, but #14 Kyley Wyss served out the gagem 15-9.






In Game 2 it once again started out with the teams trading points and sideouts. Rosevile's #37 Katy Kirby served 6 straight points to put the Eagles on top 11-6. Mt. Pulaski was able to cut the lead to 2 points, but Roseville reallied back to win the game 15-9. #18 Shawnee Perrine and #23 Jessica Adkisson had 4 kills a piece for the Eagles.






In game 3 of the match the teams once again rallied back and fourth until #24 Ellen Volle took over the serve for Mt. Pulaski. She fired off a quick ace to give Mt. Pulaski a 8-5 lead. Ellen then served five more straight points and the Honeybears never looked back. #14 Kyley Wyss once again served out the match 15-5.






#17 Kassi Schmidt of Mt. Pulaski finished the match with 10 kills. For Roseville #18 Shawnee Perrine finished with 9 kills and #23 Jessica Adkisson finished with 8 kills and 2 Aces.






The Roseville Eagles finished the season with a record of 19-7. Mt. Pulaski advances to the semifinal round tomorrow night. This is the Honeybears 9th appearance in the semifinal round of the 8A state tournament.
Stewardson-Strasburg vs. Bunker Hill Meissner
Bunker Hill took a quick lead in game one of the 2nd quarterfinal match-up and was up 5-1 on Stewardson-Strasburg. The Comets finally settled into the game and tied the game at 5 a piece. The game then went back and forth until #26 Ashley Antrim for the Comets served out the match with 5 straight service points. Ashley had 8 service points and 3 aces for Game 1.






In game 2 #12 Katrina Hanner helped put the Patriots in the lead 10-4 with 5 service points and 3 Aces. But Stewardson-Strasburg would not go away. #29 Rebeka Pruemer had 5 serive points and 3 aces to help the Comets come from behind and win the match 15-10.






Bunker Hill Meissner finished the season with a record of 11-7. Stewardson-Strasburg advances to the semifinals tomorrow night to play Mt. Pulaski. This is the 2nd 8A semifinal appearance for the Comets.
Peoria Limestone Walters vs. Greenfield
In the third quarterfinal match-up Peoria Limestone Walters came out of the starting blocks firing on all cylinders. #18 Courtney Langen served 5 straight srevice points to put the Rockets on top at the beginning of the match and they never faltered from there taking game one 15-4.













In Game 2 Greenfield started with #25 Emily Pembrook who fired off three straight aces before the sideout. Then #12 Katie Mansfield stepped in and served three more straight points. The Tigers took advantage of Limestone Walters mental errors and bad passes in the beginning of the game to take the lead 10-4. But the Rockets slowly cut away at the lead. #10 Sierra Redmon had three straight service points to put the Rockets within one point 11-12. The Rockets tied up the match at 12-12. Greenfield had multiple chances to finish the game out, but several costly service errors gave Limestone all they needed to win the match. #17 Amanda Hurst served out the game and match to give the Rockets the win 15-12.













Greenfield finished the season with a record of 24-3. Peoria Limestone Walters remains undefeated and advances to the semifinal round tomorrow night.
Bloomington Holy Trinity vs. La Harpe
In the final quarterfinal match-up La Harpe defeated the Saints of Bloomington Holy Trinity. In Game 1 La Harpe had 3 quick points to start the match. #5 Mary Joseph for Holy Trinity tied the score up at 3-3. From there are out the teams traded points until the end. #25 Anna Lenart served an ace to win the game 15-12.






After a slow start in game 2 the momentum swung to La Harpe giving them the edge in the game. #3 Hannah Fox served 7 straight points with 3 aces to give La Harpe a 13-4 lead. The eagles never looked back and won game two 15-5.






Ine Game 3 of the match the momentum continued in La Hapre's favor. Bloomington never got into a groove in the final game. They couldn't seem to run their offense and La Harpe took advantage. La Harpe won game three 15-2.






Bloomington Holy Trinity finished the season with a record of 23-2. La Harpe advances to the semifinal round with a record of 24-2 to play Peoria Limestone Walters.
Mt. Pulaski vs. Stewardson-Strasburg
The Honeybears of Mt. Pulaski advanced to the championship game of the IESA class 8A girls volleyball tournament with a 15-4, 15-5 semifinal victory over Stewasrdson-Strasburg. Game one started off slowly as both teams showed a bit of nerves. There were six sideouts before Ashley Southerlan scored a service winner for Mt. Pulaski. After Stew-Stras tied the game at one, Ellen Volle served six consecutive points for the Honeybears, two of them aces. Other Mt. Pulaski players scoring service points were Kyley Wyss, Jeri Kaye Turner, Meghan Stoll, and Kassis Schmidt who served the game winner. Game two started off all Stewardson-Strasburg as they jumped to a quick 4-0 lead behind the serving Rebeka Pruemer, Whitney Schlechte, and Ashley Antrim. But, Mt. Pulaski quickly regrouped and scored the next 14 points before Stew-Stras could finally score again. With the score at 14-5, Jeri Kaye Turner scored the service winner to give the Honeybears the game and match. Kassi Schmidt led the Honeybears with 7 kills in the match.
Peoria Limestone Walters vs. La Harpe
No match match ever proved the adage that volleyball is a game of momentum more than the second semifinal contest of the night as Peoria Limestone Walters defeated La Harpe, 12-15, 15-7, 15-7 to set up a rematch of the 7A championship match against Mt. Pulaski. Limestone Walters jumped out to an early 9-0 lead on nine consecutive service points from Chelsea Floyd. La Harpe then got service winners from Megan Harkey and Morgan Pollock to cut the deficit to 9-4. After Sierra Redmon got a point for Limestone Walters making the score 10-4, La Harpe ran off seven unanswered points to take an 11-10 lead. Limestone Walters quickly tied the score at 11 all but that was as close as the Rockets would get as La Harpe, behind the serving of Hannah Fox and Erica Eddington served out the game for a 15-11 to seal the game one victory. Game two was a see saw battle as both teams used excellent net play to score points and secure side outs. Morgan Pollock from La Harpe and Nicole Bill and Courtney Langen from Limestone Walters all had several kills for their teams. When Megan Harkey from La Harpe served an ace trailing 7-6, the Eagles tied the game and appeared to have momentum on their side. However, that was as close as they would come in the second game as Limestone Walters scored the next eight points with service winners from Nicole Bill and Sierra Redmon. Many of the Rockets' points were scored with kills from outside hitter Courtney Langen. L-W won the second game 15-7. For a short time, the third and deciding game of the match game appeared to be a carbon copy of the first game. Limestone Walters once again jumped out to an identical 9-0 lead as in the first game, only to have La Harpe come back and make it a game. With Limestone Walters leading 10-3, La Harpe fought back to an 11-7 deficit. Limestone Walters then scored the last four points to win game 3, 15-7 and secure their spot in the finals.
Stewardson-Strasburg vs. La Harpe
The Eagles of La Harpe claimed third place honors in the 2005 IESA Class 8A girls volleyball state championship with a 15-8, 15-6 victory over Stewardson-Strasburg. La Harpe gained a quick 2-0 lead but four straight points from Stewardson-Strasburg gave the Comets an early 4-2 lead. La Harpe fought back wit three straight points for a 5-4 advantage but Stew-Stras came back with three straight points for a 7-5 lead. However, the Comets could only manage one more point as La Harpe won game one, 15-8. Game two was all La Harpe and Morgan Pollock as she served 10 consecutive service points to give the Eagles a commanding 11-0 lead in game two. Although Stew-Stras was able to cut the deficit to 11-5, four more service winners gave La Harpe the game, 15-6 and third place honors. La Harpe finishes the 2005 season with a 25-3 record while Stewardson-Strasburg completes a fine season and fourth place honors with a 16-11 record.
Mt. Pulaski vs. Peoria Limestone Walters
Peoria Limestone Walters used a dominating serve game to win the first game, 15-3 in the championship match of the 2005 IESA Girls Class 8A state tournament. L-W jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead behind the serving of Chelsea Floyd and Courtney Langen. After an ace serve from Kelsey Oglesby of Mt. Pulaski and a kill from Ellen Volle, the Honeybears cut the lead to 6-2. With the teams trading single points off of kills from Ellen Volle from Mt. Pulaski and Jessica Jones from Limestone Walters to move the score to 7-3, Nicole Bill then went to work for Limestone Walters. She served three consecutive service winners, one of them being an ace to move the score to 10-3. After the teams each had a side out, Jordan Barnes from Limestone Walters had three consecutive service winners, two of them being aces. Barnes' serves were simply overpowering and handcuffed the Honeybears. After the teams again traded sideouts, Chelsea Floyd served points 14 and 15 with game point being delieverd on a kill by Nicole Bill. Limestone Walters scored the last 8 points to take game 1, 15-3. The second game of the match started out with several sideouts and excellent net play by both teams. Chelsea Floyd had two kills while Nicole Bill was serving to help Limestone Walters to an early 5-1 lead. However, Ashley Southerlan and Ellen Volle had the next five points scored in the game to give the Honeybears a 6-5 lead. Jordan Barnes then continued her dominating serves and she had four consecutive service points to put Limestone Walters up 9-6. Volle from Mt. Pulaski then had four consecutive service points to put the Honeybears back up 10-9. Floyd from Limestone Walters countered with three straight service winners to put the Rockets back up 12-10. After sideouts from both teams, Courtney Langen served points 13 and 14 with #14 being an ace. With the Rockets serving and only one point away from the match, a kill by Mt. Pulaski hung on the net and fell to the floor for a side out to Mt. Pulaski. When Limestone Walters forced a side out, Amanda Hurst served championship point. A good serve by Hurst and a return by Mt. Pulaski gave the Rockets their chance to win the 8A title. A tremendous kill by Nicole Bill went untouched and gave coach Al Huber and the Limestone Walters Rockets their first ever class 8A title. Limestone Walters becomes the fourth school to win both the 7A and 8A title in the same year. Hartsburg-Emden was the most recent school to accomplish the feat having done so in both 2003 and 2004. They also won both titles in 1999. Mt. Pulaski has accomplished this twice, in 1994 and 1998. The other school to win both the 7A and 8A title in the same year was Beason which also accomplished it twice, in 1989 and 1990. Limestone Walters finishes the season undefeated with a perfect 28-0 record. Mt. Pulaski finishes in second place and completes their season with a 22-6 record.
