Game Comments: The class 8-2A State Championship game came down to the wire as both teams battled for the ultimate prize. Christ the King came out in the first quarter and took an early lead. Winchester scored their first points late in the quarter, but managed to hold Christ the King to only 5 points in the quarter. It seemed to take both teams a little time to get through the championship game jitters but both scored more points in the second quarter and Winchester managed to keep the game close. Christ the King took a one point lead to the locker room at half-time. At the start of the second half, the lead see-sawed back and forth. Winchester took the early lead scoring right after the start of the quarter with a quick inbound play under the basket. The Cougars marched right down the court and took the lead back. The combo play of #35 and #30 for Winchester that was so powerful for the Wolverines in their semi-final game was missing this game. The fourth quarter both teams had chances to take or build a lead, but missed baskets and missed free throws kept the game within one point. Winchester had several attempts in the last seconds of the game to take the lead, but Christ the King held them off.
The post play of Springfield’s #22 Allison Brent was dominating. She led all scorers with 14 points. Olivia Kaufman, point guard for Winchester, was right behind her with 13 points.
Congratulations to the Cougars of Springfield Christ the King. This is their first 8-2A State Championship.
