Meet the 2002 Grand Marshals

Two Grand Marshals will lead the annual Parade of Champions Saturday night (March 9) before the championship bouts of the 23rd annual Illinois Elementary School Association (IESA) State Final Wrestling Tournament.

Named Grand Marshals for 2002 are:

The IESA started having a Grand Marshal(s) in 1996. The Grand Marshal(s) are honored for their contributions to wrestling at the junior high school level and the young men who participate in the sport. They are nominated by the IESA Wrestling Advisory Committee and approved by the IESA Board of Directors. The marshals will play an integral role of the Parade of Champions as they will lead the 36 individual finalists and their coaches into the gymnasium, amidst music, applause and cheers from teammates, parents, family, and fans.

Here is a closer look at the 2002 Grand Marshals:

A graduate of Reavis High School in Burbank, Illinois, Dave Brost has been involved with the sport of wrestling for the past 38 years as a participant, coach, official, administrator, and parent. Dave was captain of his high school team his senior year and qualified for the IHSA finals that year. After graduating from high school, Dave attended Western Illinois University where he majored in Physical Education. He later earned his master's degree in educational administration from Northern Illinois University. Dave is currently the Athletic Director for Lincoln-Way East High School in Frankfort. He coached junior high and high school wrestling. He has been an IHSA licensed official for 30 years retiring last year after working the IESA state finals here at Northern Illinois University. He was assigned to work the IHSA individual finals nine times. He served as a member of the IHSA wrestling advisory committee. He was named Official of the Year in 2001 by the Illinois Wrestling Officials and Coaches Association and will be inducted into the IWCOA Hall of Fame in April, 2002. Married to his wife, Teri for 30 years, they have three children. Dave had the honor of officiating the last six IESA State wrestling tournaments.

Jim Rankin is the current principal of Nash Middle School in Clifton but his wrestling roots go back to the days when he was a member of the 1967 IHSA state wrestling champion with Rock Island. He wrestled three years for the Rocks at weight classes 95, 103, and 112. Jim received his bachelors degree from Eastern Illinois University in 1977 and his masters degree in educational administration from Illinois State University in 1987. He coached for 10 years at Coal City and was instrumental in the formation of wrestling as a state series activity in the IESA. He started the wrestling program at Nash Middle School. A former licensed official, Jim has been married to his wife Deena for 26 years and they have two daughters. Jim sums up his coaching years this way, "I look back at my years in coaching with honor and humility. It was a great way to touch the lives of many young adults in a positive and rewarding way."
