Game Comments: The atmosphere in the gym at St. Joseph was electric for the 7-1A Championship game between the Eagles of Gifford and the Wildcats of Cissna Park. The fans from both communities came out to support these two teams and there was standing room only in the gym. It was the tale of two halves for both teams. Cissna Park was a little unsettled in the beginning largely because of nerves and Gifford took advantage of this with an early lead but the Wildcats were able to stay within four heading into the locker room at the half.
The story of the second half was turnovers and rebounds. A different team for Cissna Park came out of the lockerroom in the second half. They were more settled and dominated the boards giving themselves second and third chances for points each time down the court. Their defense held Gifford to three points in the third quarter causing turnovers that they quickly turned into points. Leading scorer of the game was #4 Christian Stadeli with 17 points and his brother, #24 Julian Stadeli added 16 for the Wildcats. #30 Hayden Cargo for Gifford had10 points for the Eagles.
This is Cissna Park’s 2nd state 7-1A state title. They won the tournament in 2008 as well. Congratulations to both teams on a hard fought game and great season.
