Game Comments: The Eagles of Gifford faced the Knights of Ottawa Marquette in the first semi-final game of the night. Both teams were a little stiff for the first minutes of the quarter, but quickly settled down. The teams kept in close ending the first quarter 7-6 Ottawa. In the second quarter, Gifford held Ottawa to three points and #30 Hayden Cargo sank two three throws with three seconds to give Gifford a 14-10 lead into the locker-room at the half.
In the second half of play the teams traded baskets and turnovers several trips down the court. #23 Max Donahue drained a three in the last seconds of the quarter to cut Gifford lead to two heading into the fourth quarter. In the final quarter, Marquette tied the game on a lay-up by #5 Logan Komater and then Gifford turned the ball over to give the ball back to Marquette. #21 Liam Dougherty added a basket and one on the inbounds play to give Ottawa the lead 24-21. #5 Joe Schluter brought it back to one point posting up for two in the paint. After a turnover by the Knights, Gifford brought the ball up and retook the lead. 25-24. The teams traded baskets and turnovers several trips down the court until Gifford landed a basket and a 3 point lead with 1:59 to play. #2 Emmanuel Lutes hit a jumper to give Gifford a 5 point lead. But Ottawa quickly add a jumper of their own. With 40 second to play #23 Donahue made a jumper in the lane to cut Gifford’s lead to 1. After a time-out Gifford inbounded the ball with 32.5 seconds to play and Ottawa fouls them with 21.6 seconds to play. #30 Cargo drained both his free throws giving Gifford a three point lead and then Ottawa turned the ball over bringing the ball up the court with 18 seconds to play. The Eagles would not relinquish this lead.
Leading scorers of the game was #5 Logan Komater with 14 points for Ottawa and #5 Joe Schluter for Gifford had 11 points. Ottawa Marquette will play in the third place game on Thursday night at 6:00 and Gifford will play for their first championship title at 7:30pm.
