Game Comments: Pleasant Plains jumped to a 10-2 lead in the first quarter but Chillicothe managed to outscore the Redbirds 7-2 in the final 2 minutes of the quarter to only be down 12-9 after one stanza. The Mustangs pulled to within one after Austin Johnson's jumper. The Redbirds answered that basket with one of its own on a layup from Anthony Venturini to go back up by three. A steal and a basket by Caleb Magee cut the deficit back to two and once again Plains answered that with a layup by Logan Larson. Chillicothe then got a rebound bucket from Konnor Smithson to close the gap to 16-15. Both teams then had several misses the rest of the quarter before Larson scored another layup to give the Redbirds an 18-15 lead. Jib Sunderland made two free throws to close out the scoring in the first half as Pleasant Plains led Chillicothe, 18-17 at halftime. Chilicothe turned up the defensive pressure in the 3rd quarter by limiting the Redbirds to just two points. Sunderland scored on a layup with 2 minutes remaining in the quarter to give Chillicothe a 21-18 lead. Plains countered that when Michael Cameron hit a 2 point goal just inside the three point arc. Austin Johnson then closed out the scoring at the :50 mark with a two point bucket to give the Mustangs a 23-20 lead after three quarters. Plains tied the game at 23 with 4:19 left in the game when Venturini rebounded a missed shot from one of his teammates and put it back in to forge the tie. After a miss by Chillicothe, the Redbirds held the ball and worked it around the perimeter. Cameron attempted a three point try with 2:44 remaining which was off the mark, but Steven Rush grabbed the rebound. Venturini then nailed a bomb from three point range to give the Redbirds a 26-23 lead. A missed three point attempt by the Mustangs turned out OK when Campbell grabbed the rebound and put it back in to make it a 26-25 game with 2:10 left. Once again, Plains worked the ball around the perimeter, holding it for over a minute. With :49.5 seconds remaining, Venturini was fouled and went to the line for a one and bonus. He made the first to give Plains a 27-25 lead. The second free throw bounced long off the rim and Plains was able to secure the rebound and immediately called a time out. On the inbounds play, Venturini was again fouled and this time he knocked home both ends of the one and one to give the Redbirds a 29-25 lead with 42 seconds remaining. Chillicothe ran a beautiful play that resulted in a two point bucket for Austin Johnson from the top of the key and the Mustangs were right back in it, trailing by two, 29-27 with 27 seconds left in the game. Cameron was fouled with :19.3 showing on the clock and he made the front end of the one and bonus. Chillicothe rebounded the missed free throw and immediately called a time out with Plains leading 30-27. Chillicothe then set up a potential game tying play. Johnson just missed a three point attempt but Konnor Smithson rebounded the miss to bring the Mustangs to within 1 at 30-29 with 2 seconds remaining. Chillicothe called a timeout after the Smithson basket. On the inbounds pass, Plains threw it to half court where it was intercepted by a Chillicothe player. However, as he tried to get his feet set for a heroic three point shot, he traveled and the ball was turned back over to Plains with just :1.4 left. Logan Larson was fouled with just :0.6 ticks of the clock remaining and he made the first and missed the second. Although Chillicothe got the rebound, there simply was not enough time to get off any kind of shot and Pleasant Plains secured a 31-29 victory in an extremely well-played contest.
