Game Comments: After a slow start by both teams, Calumet City Schrum and Chillicothe both heated things up to begin the 1st game of the 2008 7th grade Class 3A finals at Clinton High School. The first basket of the game wasn't scored until the 3:00 minute mark of the first quarter and when Deland Deere hit a 3 point shot at the 1:20 mark, Schrum had jumped out to a 9-0 lead. Schrum scored a layup with 37 seconds remaining to make it an 11-0 lead before Chillicothe answered with a layup for the 11-2 first quarter advantage to Schrum. However, Chillicothe was on fire to start the 2nd quarter as they scored the first 9 points of the 2nd quarter to tie the game at 11. Schrum hit a bucket at the 1:25 mark to take a 13-11 lead but back-to-back 3 point goals from Jib Sunderland vaulted the Mustangs to a 17-13 lead. But, with momentum on the side of the Mustangs and with less than one second remaining in the half, Deere hit a huge 3 point bucket for the Spartans to cut the lead to 17-16 as the teams went into the locker room. The third quater was controlled early by Schrum as Deere hit a three point goal to give the Spartans a 6 point lead at 23-17. But the Mustangs fought back and actually had two shots with less than 5 seconds to go in the quarter to tie the game but couldn't convert either and Schrum led 25-23 heading into the final stanza. The 4th quarter was as close and exciting as any game that will be played. The Spartans widened their lead at the end of the third quarter to 28-25 before Chillicothe took the lead, 30-29, with a rebound basket with just under three minutes remaining in the game. The final three minutes were action packed. Deere made two free throws at the 2:02 mark to give the Spartans their final lead of the game, 31-30. Chillicothe answered that with a lay-up at the 1:32 mark for a 32-31 lead. Deere went to the line for a one and bonus with :49 on the clock to give Schrum a chance for the lead. He missed the front end but Schrum grabbed the rebound but could not convert the rebound attempt. Schrum quickly fouled Austin Johnson at the :38 second mark and Johnson sank both free throws for a 34-31 Mustang lead. Schrum turned the ball over on their next possesion but their was plenty of fireworks left. Konnor Smithson was fouled with :26 remaining and he went to the line with a one and bonus. His first attempt hit the back of the rim, bounced at least five feet above the rim......and dropped straight through. He swished the second free throw and the Mustangs appeared to have things under control with a 36-31 lead and only 26 seconds remaining. But Deland Deere had other ideas. The lightning quick point guard, hit a 25 ft. bomb that banked off the backboard with 16 seconds to go to cut the lead to 36-34. Schrum immediately fouled Johnson and with :13.9 seconds to go, he calmly sank both free throws for a 38-34 lead. But the 5'0" Deere, Schrum's all-everything point guard, dropped another bomb from 25 ft. at the :7.7 mark to brng the Spartans to within one at 38-37. Schrum again fouled a Chilli player, this time putting Caleb Magee at the line for what was now the double bonus. Magee missed the first free throw but nailed the second one to give Chilli the lead at 39-37. The Spartans inbounded the ball and got it in the hands of Deere. His 24 ft. shot at the buzzer would have counted but the ball rattled around the rim, was practically down but didn't go through. Chillicothe won a terrific game, 39-37, and now advances to this evening's semi-final contest.
